Atlanta, Ga. – The Bowling Green State University softball team opened play at the Springhill Suites Buckhead Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech, Friday by losing a pair of games, dropping an 8-0 decision to Penn State and a 10-0 result to the host school.
Bowling Green had just one hit in each contest and struggled to keep the two teams off the basepaths.
In the opener against Penn State, the Nittany Lions jumped out early with a two-run first inning. The Falcons tried to cut into the deficit in the top of the second, getting an Erika Stratton leadoff walk. She moved to second on a Zada Lines sacrifice bunt, but she was stranded there.
Penn State added another run in the second and then blew it open with five in the third. The Falcons' only hit came on a single from Andrea Arney in the fifth. She advanced to third but was unable to score.
The Nittany Lions pounded out 10 hits in the game and freshman Erin Greenwalt took the loss on the mound, falling to 0-6. She threw the first two innings, allowing three earned runs before Lines replaced her and pitched the next two innings, giving up four earned.
Game two started much stronger for the Falcons as Melissa Bott, who fell to 0-5 on the season, set down Georgia Tech quickly in the top of the first. After Bowling Green went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, the Yellow Jackets responded with a two-run homer in the second for a 2-0 lead. Georgia Tech built a big cushion with a seven-run third inning on four hits, a pair of walks, and a hit batter.
Georgia Tech added one last run in the fourth before Rachel Proehl had the team's only extra base hit, a fourth-inning lead-off triple. But she was stranded there and the Falcons remained scoreless on the game.
Penn State improved to 9-7 on the season and Georgia Tech moved to 14-4 with the wins. Bowling Green, now 2-12, will play two more games in the tournament Saturday to close out the spring break trip.
