Sophomore Maddy Eccleston & the Falcons opened MAC play with a win at Buffalo
BGSU Begins MAC Play with 5-2 Win at Buffalo
March 25, 2011 | Women's Tennis
Falcons improve to 10-3 overall
The Bowling Green State University tennis team got off to a successful start in conference play, picking up a 5-2 road win over the University at Buffalo Friday afternoon (March 25). The dual match, the Mid-American Conference opener for both clubs, was held at the Miller Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 10-3 overall. The Bulls drop to 4-7 in dual-match play this season to date.
BGSU captured the doubles point by the slimmest of margins, as the teams split a pair of 8-6 results at the top-two flights, before the third-flight match -- and the doubles point -- came down to a tiebreaker. At the top flight, the Falcon duo of senior Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston gutted out a win over UB's Diana Popescu and Miranda Podlas.
In second-flight action, however, the Bulls' team of Aleksandra Petrova and Kira Golenko downed sophomores Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson by that narrow 8-6 results. The number-three flight saw Falcon sophomore Mary Hill team with freshman Nikki Chiricosta for a 9-8 victory over Buffalo's Marta Stoyanova and Shelby Bates, winning the tiebreaker by a 10-6 score.
That third-flight match featured a pair of first-year transfers who were teammates last season, but opponents on Friday. Sophomores Hill of BGSU and Bates of UB each played at Coastal Carolina University in 2009-10 before transferring to their respective schools.
The Falcons entered singles play with a 1-0 lead in the match, and soon upped that advantage to 3-0. Nikki Chiricosta dropped her first set to Stoyanova at the third flight, but rebounded to take the second and third sets by lopsided margins. At flight number five, freshman Emily Reuland picked up a win over Tamara Markovic in straight sets. With Reuland leading the second set by a 5-4 score, the final game took a half-hour to play, before Reuland closed out the win.
The Bulls got a point when Podlas picked up a win over Johnson at the sixth flight. Podlas outlasted her BGSU foe in a first-set tiebreaker before winning a 6-3 decision in the second set.
But, BGSU clinched the match as Hill downed Golenko in a three-setter at the fourth flight. Eccleston then closed out Petrova at flight number two. Eccleston won in straight sets, but she and Petrova battled through a two-and-a-half-hour match before the BG soph clinched the victory.
Popescu salvaged a second point for the Bulls with a narrow victory in three sets over Christine Chiricosta at the top flight.
The win gives the Falcons a 12-3 lead in the all-time series with Buffalo. BG turned the tables on the Bulls, who had picked up a 5-2 win at the Perrysburg Tennis Center last year in the final regular-season match (April 24, 2010).
The Falcons remain on the road, heading to Northeast Ohio for a Saturday (March 26) match vs. the University of Akron. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow, Ohio.
