Zips rally from early deficit; Christine Chiricosta ties BGSU career doubles wins record
The Bowling Green State University tennis team took an early lead, but the University of Akron rallied back to post a 5-2 win over the Falcons Saturday afternoon (March 26). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
With the victory, the Zips improve to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in MAC play, while dropping the Falcons to 10-4 and 1-1, respectively. The loss snapped BGSU's four-match win streak.
BGSU won a hard-fought doubles point. The Zips' team of Zara Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuria, ranked 27th in the nation in the most recent ITA doubles ratings, downed BGSU sophomores Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson at the second flight. But, the Brown and Orange would pick up wins in the other two matches.
At the top flight, senior co-captain Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston defeated UA's Prang Pantusart and Angelika Jogasuria by an 8-6 outcome. The Falcons captured the doubles point after freshman Nikki Chiricosta and sophomore Mary Hill outlasted the Zips' Jeremie Benjamin and Anya Baronayte, 9-8 (2).
For Christine Chiricosta, the doubles win was the 84th of her career, tying the school record. She already owns the BGSU records for career singles and combined wins.
After BG took the doubles point, though, Akron would reel off five-straight singles wins to clinch the match. Pantusart downed Hill at the fourth flight, and Natalia Kuvankina defeated Johnson in sixth-level action. Harutyunyan picked up a victory against Christine Chiricosta, and Angelina Jogasuria clinched Akron's victory with a three-set win at the second flight.
Angelika Jogasuria was a winner over Nikki Chiricosta at the third flight, but BG's other freshman, Emily Reuland, picked up the Falcons' second point with a win over Baronayte at the fifth flight. The two players split their two sets, before Reuland won a tiebreaker, 10-7, to capture the match.
BGSU now returns to Northwest Ohio to prepare for a pair of home matches. The Falcons will be the home team for the first time in nearly two months, hosting Miami University on Friday (April 1), then facing Ball State University on Saturday (April 2). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
