Toledo, Ohio – After the Toledo softball team won the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader against Bowling Green in dramatic walk-off fashion, the Falcons could have hung their heads. But the team bounced back by scoring seven times in the first two innings of game two and routed Toledo 10-2 to split the doubleheader following a 6-4 loss in the opener.
Bowling Green scored five first-inning runs in the second game to blow it open early. Hannah Fulk singled, moved to second on a fielding error by the Toledo left fielder, and stole third base. Rachel Proehl followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0 quickly. Andrea Arney singled and Katie Yoho walked to load the bases and Missy Bowman ripped a ball that the Toledo shortstop was unable to make a play on and cleared the bases for a 4-0 lead. Bowman eventually scored on another Toledo error to make it 5-0 after one.
The Falcons tacked on two more in the second as Fulk opened the inning with another single. Paige Berger walked and Arney hit an RBI single. Berger eventually scored on yet another Toledo error as the lead ballooned to seven runs.
Toledo did fight back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third but the Rockets ran themselves out of the inning by getting thrown out on the basepaths and the Falcons quickly struck back again.
In the top of the fourth, Fulk again led off the inning with a single. She scored on Berger's RBI single later in the inning and Yoho followed with her second career home run to make it 10-2. Toledo was unable to score again and the game ended after five innings for the mercy rule.
Melissa Bott got the win on the mound, improving to 2-11. She allowed six hits and no walks over five innings, striking out a pair and giving up two earned runs. Fulk went 3-for-3 and scored three runs, while Arney went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. The first five batters in the Bowling Green lineup combined to go 8-for-13, tallying all of the Falcons' hits in the game.
In the opening game, Toledo spoiled a big Bowling Green comeback in which it appeared Bowman would be the hero.
The Rockets broke open a scoreless game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth but Bowling Green got one back on Proehl's RBI single in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Arney walked and Yoho reached on an error to bring Bowman to the plate. She took an 0-2 pitch and drove it down the left field line for a three-run homer that gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh when Toledo put two runners on. Jillian Spink drove a pitch over the right center fence for the walk-off homer and the 6-4 victory.
Toledo moves to 7-30 on the season and 2-8 in MAC play. Bowling Green is now 5-24 overall and 1-9 in conference action. The Falcons will host Detroit in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.
