BGSU sophomore earns weekly conference honor for first time
Bowling Green State University tennis standout Mary Hill has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon (April 20). Hill earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Release from MAC Office - word document
Hill, a native of Munster, Ind. (Munster H.S.), was a perfect 4-0 in her weekend matches, winning the clinching singles match on back-to-back days to help the Falcons to a pair of 4-3 wins. BGSU defeated Eastern Michigan on Friday (April 15) and Toledo the following day, with both duals held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
Hill teamed with freshman Nikki Chiricosta for a pair of doubles wins, an 8-1 triumph vs. EMU and an 8-3 outcome against UT, at the third flight. That duo is now 16-4 on the season, including a 9-1 record in dual matches and a 6-1 mark in MAC competition.
In the EMU match, Hill defeated Mariya Toncheva in three sets at the fourth flight, with the overall match tied, 3-3. After losing, 6-1, in her opening set, Hill rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set, then rode that momentum to a fast start in the third set en route to a 6-1 win. That third-set result came after all of the other singles matches had been completed, meaning that only Hill and Toncheva were still on the court with the BGSU-EMU match hanging in the balance.
The next day, Hill's singles match was not the last one to finish. But, with BGSU leading, 3-2, only two singles matches were ongoing, with the Falcons losing in the other contest. Again, Hill posted a dominant 6-1 third-set victory to capture the match against UT's Kelsey Anonsen.
Individually, Hill is now 47-18 on the year. The sophomore, a transfer from Coastal Carolina Univ., is 22-11 in singles and 25-7 in doubles this year to date, pacing the Falcons in doubles victories. Hill's doubles win total is the fourth highest in BGSU single-season history, while her combined win total ties her for sixth on that school list.
The Falcons are now 13-7 in dual matches this year to date, having topped last season's overall win total. With one MAC match left, BGSU has doubled last year's league win total, having gone 4-3 in MAC play to date after finishing 2-6 a year ago.
Head coach Penny Dean's team heads to DeKalb, Ill., to close the regular season, facing Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon (April 23). Then, the Brown and Orange will prepare for the MAC Championships, which will be hosted by EMU the following weekend (April 28-May 1).
