WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After holding a share of the lead during the first round, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team concluded the first day of the 2011 Boilermaker Invitational in fifth place, two strokes behind Northern Illinois entering play.
Bowling Green scored a composite 296 in the first round to secure a three-way tie for first place with Idaho and tournament host Purdue. During the day's second round, the Falcons recorded a total of 306 to finish with 602 for the day. The Orange and Brown are nine strokes behind first-place Purdue (593).
The Falcons are 12 strokes ahead of the sixth-place team, Hartford, who recorded a 614 on Saturday (April 23).
Individually, Parker Hewit is in position for his best career finish. He concluded Saturday's play in a fourth-place tie at two-over-par, just two strokes behind the co-leaders. Hewit carded a one-under-par 71 in the first round, then ended the day with a 75.
Only three of the 120 rounds played on Saturday were better than Hewit's opening 71, and only one was better than 70.

Two other BGSU golfers currently reside in the top 20. Wes Gates earned sole possession of 18th place with a first-day 152, which included a 74 in the second round. Torey Brummett, playing as an individual, joins Gates. Brummett paired rounds of 76 and 77 to earn a tie for 19th.
Chris Melvin and Charlie Olson completed Bowling Green's five-man team this weekend. Melvin threatens to break into the top 20 after shooting 154 on Saturday. Olson completed his 36-hole trek in 187 strokes (82-85).
