Falcon Recruit Qualifies For Texas 5A State Tournament
April 27, 2011 | Women's Golf
Shelby Wilson, currently a senior Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas, recently qualified for the 2011 Texas 5A State Tournament, which will be held on May 12th and 13th at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
Wilson earned the honor by winning a sudden-death playoff on the final day of the Region I-5A tournament. She ended regulation with a composite 147 (73-74), then had to play the par-three tenth hole in the playoff with Kathryn Jimerson of El Paso.
Jimerson lost the coin toss, and Wilson chose to hit first off the tee. According to Wilson, she placed her tee shot on the green while Jimerson's landed wide. Jimerson bogeyed the hole, and when Wilson sank her par putt, she earned an individual spot in the state tournament.
Wilson will be one of 48 competitors at the state event; eight are qualifying individuals, while the other 40 are members of the eight qualifying teams.
Falcons' head coach Stephanie Young said, “Shelby has worked extremely hard on her game, and I am thrilled that she will be headed to (the state tournament). Winning a playoff to secure a spot in Austin is a testament to her desire to take her game up against the best.”
This accomplishment adds to an impressive list for Wilson, who qualified for the regional tournament with the aid of a personal-best round of 67 at the district event.
Wilson now owns 18 career victories and 77 different top-ten finishes, including wins at the Castle Hills Collegiate Preview and Starburst Junior Golf Classic.
In the Region II-4A tournament, fellow Falcon recruit Patricia Holt played very well before falling just one shot shy of a repeat berth on the state level.
Holt, a senior at Frisco High School, carded a 73 and led the tournament after the first round. She found some brief mid-round struggles in the second round and ended the tournament with a total of 152 (73-79). She placed fifth overall, just one shot behind a pair who qualified for the state championship as individuals.
In 2010, she competed on the Jimmy Clay course in Austin, Texas during the Texas 4A State Tournament, finishing in a tie for sixth with a final tally of 155.
Young added, “Although Patricia was just shy of a repeat state berth, her game has become stronger throughout the season and over her career. Her tireless work ethic is evident in her list of accomplishments and state ranking. The practice and preparation she puts forth, along with her commitment to the process of becoming the best golfer possible, is just fantastic.”
Holt will also join the Falcons for the 2011-12 season after compiling multiple tournament victories and 18 top-ten finishes during her high school career, according to Junior Golf Scoreboard.
According to Golfweek's latest rankings, Wilson is tenth among Texas seniors and 314th nationally. Holt ranks 12th in Texas and 353rd nationally.
Young said, “Both Shelby and Patricia have had outstanding senior seasons. We are proud of all their accomplishments and that they are part of the BGSU women's golf family. Everyone is looking forward to their arrival on campus in August!”
