Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green pitching staff allowed just one earned run in Friday afternoon's softball doubleheader against Miami (Ohio). But the Falcons' defense struggled late in game one and the offense was held scoreless in game two as Bowling Green lost 5-1 and 1-0.
Both games were scoreless heading into the top of the sixth inning and Miami broke the tie in each game with a single run in that frame. The RedHawks posted four more unearned runs in the seventh inning of game one.
In the opener, Melissa Bott went the distance as all five of Miami's runs were unearned. The senior pitcher worked around 11 RedHawks hits for much of the contest but eventually gave up a run in the sixth. In that frame, Jordan McElroy reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Kristy Arbour singled to left field to move her to third and Daniela Torres pushed McElroy home on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0.
In the top of the seventh, Miami tacked on four more runs, getting help from two Bowling Green errors. The big blast was a three-run Jenna McGivney home run in that inning.
Those runs ended up being important as Andrea Arney hit her third homer of the year, a solo blast, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 5-1.
Jessica Simpson got the victory for Miami, allowing just two hits over seven innings. She had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings. Lindsay Arney broke it up with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth.
Game two was also a pitcher's duel as Zada Lines gave up just one Miami hit in the first four innings. Lines worked around a one-out double in the fifth but the RedHawks finally broke through in the sixth. Kirstie Fehrenbach led off with a double in the inning and scored on Meghan Mawn's one-out triple. Lines limited the damage as Mawn was thrown out at the plate on an infield grounder and the score remained 1-0.
Bowling Green had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Hannah Fulk doubled to start the frame. Rachel Proehl singled and stole second to put runners on second and third. After Paige Berger struck out swinging, Andrea Arney reached on a bunt single to load the bases. But Katie Yoho struck out swinging and Fulk was picked off third base to end the inning.
Lines went all seven innings for Bowling Green, giving up just four hits and walking only one, while striking out five. Fulk went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Falcons.
Katie Osburn got the win for Miami by going five innings and giving up four hits. Simpson closed the door by pitching the final two innings.
Miami improves to 26-18 overall and 9-7 in conference play with the wins. Bowling Green falls to 7-31 overall and 1-14 in MAC action. The Falcons will host Ball State Saturday and Sunday for two more league games.
