Mount Pleasant, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University softball team hit three home runs in Saturday's doubleheader but Central Michigan pounded out 25 hits and defeated the Falcons 7-3 and 10-2.
Hannah Fulk and Paige Berger hit homers in game one, giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead but Central Michigan scored in each of the final three innings to overcome the deficit. Freshman Katie Yoho hit her first career homer in game two but Central Michigan scored seven times in the first inning to put it away early.
In the opener, Central Michigan's Macy Merchant led off the game with a triple and then scored on Summer Knoop's RBI single. But Zada Lines settled down and held the Chippewas without another run through the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth, Bowling Green struck as Fulk led off the frame with her third homer of the season. Rachel Proehl then singled and Berger hit her sixth home run of the year to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead. The blast was Berger's 18th of her career, tying her for third most in BGSU history.
The lead, however, was short-lived as Molly Coldren led off the bottom half of the inning with a round tripper to cut the deficit to one. Knoop eventually had a two-run single to give Central Michigan a 4-3 lead. The Chippewas tacked on two more in the fifth and another in the sixth for the 7-3 victory.
Fulk and Proehl each went 2-for-3 in the game but Central Michigan had 14 hits as five Chippewas had two hits each.
Game two started poorly for Bowling Green as Central Michigan sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on five hits. The Chippewas added two more runs in the second to take a 9-0 lead. In the top of the third, Lindsay Arney reached on an error with two outs and Fulk drove her home with an RBI triple to make it 9-1.
Yoho opened the top of the fifth with a solo blast that made it 9-2 but the game ended when Brittini Merchant doubled in the bottom half of the inning, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
Fulk went 2-for-3 in the second game as well but the Falcons had just four hits for the contest.
Central Michigan improves to 20-12 overall and 5-3 in MAC play, while Bowling Green falls to 4-21 overall and 0-8 in league action. The Falcons will play at Notre Dame Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
