May 10, 2011 | Softball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University softball pitcher Zada Lines was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week and first baseman Paige Berger was named the MAC East Division Player of the Week, the league announced today.
Lines and Berger helped the Falcons finish the season in strong fashion as the team won five of its final six games. The squad went 3-1 during the week with the duo playing a large role in all three victories.
Lines went 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA, pitching two complete game victories and striking out a season-high nine batters in a 4-1 win over Ohio Friday. She allowed just seven hits and two walks to go with one unearned run in that contest. Lines came back the next day against Akron with another complete game performance, allowing one earned run over seven innings, giving up seven hits while striking out four without a walk. On Sunday, she entered the game against Akron with Bowling Green trailing 3-2. Lines gave up just one hit over the final 2.1 innings as the Falcons rallied for a 7-3 win. After starting the year with a 4-8 record, she earned wins in each of her final four decisions to end the year at 8-8.
Berger hit .600 and slugged 1.333 in the four games over the weekend. She had five extra base hits (two doubles and three home runs), including a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh in the 4-1 win over Ohio. She came up just a triple shy of a cycle twice in the four games, beginning with a 4-for-4 performance in game one against Ohio with two singles, a double, and a home run. She followed that up by going 1-for-3 in the second game of Friday's doubleheader including that walk-off game-winner. Berger then went 1-for-4 with a run scored in a 3-2 win over Akron Saturday and went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a two-run double in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Zips. She had eight RBI on the week, five runs scored, a stolen base, and was perfect in 31 chances in the field.
Bowling Green completed the year with a record of 12-32 overall and 6-15 in MAC play. The Falcons started the year by going 1-14 in league action but won five of their final six games to end the season on a high-note.
