Falcons Getting it Done in the Classroom as Well as on the Court
May 06, 2011 | Women's Tennis
With 15 wins -- just one shy of the school record -- and a Mid-American Conference finish that was three spots higher than predicted, the Bowling Green State University tennis team obviously had a successful year on the courts in 2010-11. And, the Falcons of head coach Penny Dean have been just as successful in the classroom again this season.
The tennis Falcons picked up several of the top awards at the BGSU Department of Athletics Honors Night a few weeks back. Dean's student-athletes took home the award for the highest grade-point average among all women's teams at BGSU. The team's GPA during the evaluation period (the Spring 2010 and Fall 2010 semesters) was 3.75. Additionally, the Falcons' GPA was the most improved among BG teams, up from a 2.99 GPA the previous year.
In the Fall 2010 semester, the Falcons' team GPA was an eye-popping 3.86. Five of the team's eight student-athletes had a perfect 4.00 GPA for the semester, and all eight had a Fall semester GPA of at least 3.40.
Through the Fall 2010 semester, all eight Falcon student-athletes also have a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or higher, and four players have a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better.
"The team set some extremely high goals in the classroom for this year," said Dean. "They felt everyone was capable of reaching them. It just blew me away that they were able to get a 3.86 GPA in the fall, and I am so proud of them."
The team's lone senior, Christine Chiricosta, added to her long list of awards at the honors night banquet. Chiricosta, the winningest player in program history, was the department's female recipient of the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor, which is the highest award given by the BGSU Athletics Department. is given to one male and one female student-athlete who encompasses everything that a BGSU student-athlete should be.
Additionally, the tennis team's lone junior, Jessica Easdale, was one of three finalists for the Falcon Club Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
"All eight of them were excited about Christine and Jessica being up for individual awards at the banquet, but each of them was most excited about winning the team GPA award. BGSU Tennis rocks!"
Last season, the BGSU tennis team earned an NCAA Public Recogniation Award for the fourth consecutive season. That award is given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates. Additionally, Christine Chiricosta was named to the Academic All-MAC Team and went on to be named an Academic All-American in '09-10. And, BGSU was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team, with three players -- Chiricosta, Easdale and Maddy Eccleston -- being named ITA Scholar Athletes. All of the awards listed in this paragraph have yet to be announced for the 2010-11 season.
The Falcons finished the '10-11 campaign with a dual-match record of 15-8 and a MAC ledger of 5-3. BGSU, picked to place seventh in the MAC in the preseason coaches poll, actually finished fourth, then advanced to the semifinal round of the MAC Championships. Seven of the eight student-athletes are slated to return in 2011-12.
