Two Falcons Named NGCA All-American Scholars

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- The National Golf Coaches Association has announced the recipients of ithe group's 2011 All-American Scholar award. Two members of the Bowling Green State University women's golf team, Amy Ruthenberg and Kelsey Benson, earned the honor.
The NGCA All-American Scholar distinction is one of the most difficult to obtain in all of college athletics. To be selected, student-athletes must carry a minimum 3.50 grade point average, on a 4.0 scale.
Kelsey Benson just completed her first season with the Falcons. As a psychology major, Benson carries a perfect 4.0 GPA. On the golf course, she played 11 rounds during her debut season. Benson finished with an 83.91 per-round scoring average, and shot a career-best 79 in back-to-back rounds to finish third at the Quail Run Invitational in March. She also shot an 80 en route to a tournament total of 246 at her first event as a Falcon, the North Texas Fall Classic.
Amy Ruthenberg will be a junior during the upcoming 2011-12 season. Through her first two years at BGSU, She has succeeded in the classroom to the tune of a 3.949 GPA while majoring in biology. Ruthenberg was also one of the team leaders on the links. She was the only Falcon to play in each of the team's 22 rounds during the 2010-11 season and improved her per-round average by two strokes during her sophomore campaign.
Ruthenberg placed a season-best 16th overall at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitatioinal and shot a career-low 76 at the North Texas Fall Classic as well as the EKU Lady Colonel Classic. She also carded sub-80 rounds at the Ball State Cardinal Classic and Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
Falcons' head coach Stephanie Young had led the Falcons to academic success during each her five full seasons as the team's coach. Beginning with the 2006-07 season, BGSU athletes have received the NGCA All-American Scholar honor in five consecutive years. Overall, six Falcon athletes have been named to the list a total of 13 times while under Young's tutelage.
The 2011 NGCA All-American Scholar list includes 369 NCAA Division I athletes, including 29 from a total of nine Mid-American Conference institutions.
