Bowling Green State University tennis coach Penny Dean has announced that senior Jessica Easdale and junior Maddy Eccleston have been named team co-captains for the 2011-12 season.
"I am excited about having Jessica and Maddy as our captains," said Dean. "Jess, as a returning captain, has the experience and also has good overall vision and communication.
"Maddy is only a junior, but is a natural leader with great spirit and communication skills. Team members look up to her. Both Jess and Maddy are outstanding students in difficult majors."
Easdale, a native of Dublin, Ohio (Dublin Jerome H.S.), is a co-captain for the second consecutive year. She has 50 career wins, despite missing nearly all of her first season due to injury. Easdale has been named an ITA Scholar Athlete in each of her first three seasons at BGSU.
Last season, Easdale had an overall record of 21-18, including a 15-15 singles mark and a 6-3 doubles record. She played at the sixth singles flight down the stretch, winning two of her last three regular-season matches as the Falcons sewed up the fourth seed for the MAC Championships. Easdale had a 29-17 mark in 2009-10, her sophomore season, and enters the '11-12 campaign with a career mark of 32-29 in singles and a doubles ledger of 18-10
Eccleston, a native of Toledo, Ohio (St. Ursula Academy), has a career winning percentage of .662. After only two years in the Brown and Orange, she is just one win away from moving into the top 25 in career victories at BGSU. Eccleston has an 86-44 overall record entering the 2011-12 campaign, including a 39-26 singles record and a stellar 47-18 (.723) doubles mark.
Eccleston, who has been named an ITA Scholar Athlete in each of her two seasons at BGSU to date, also was named to the Academic All-MAC Team last spring, in her first year of eligibility for the award. She won two-thirds of her matches, with an overall record of 46-23, in '10-11 (21-13 in singles, 25-10 in doubles). Eccleston teamed with Christine Chiricosta at the top flight for all but one of her 35 doubles matches last year, doing 16-6 in dual matches and 6-2 in MAC regular-season action. In singles, Eccleston played at the second singles flight from late February through the end of the season. As a freshman, she had a 40-21 overall record, leading the team with 22 doubles wins.
Easdale is a neuroscience major at BGSU, while Eccleston is majoring in health science. Easdale has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.64, and Eccleston has a 3.92 cume GPA entering the Fall 2011 semester.
Easdale, Eccleston and the Falcons open the 2011-12 season this weekend, hosting the BGSU Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 16-17). The nine-team invite will be held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, with some matches being played at Bowling Green H.S.
