BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University football team scored on a Matt Schilz to Ray Hutson pass with just 2.1 seconds left in regulation, but the ensuing extra point attempt was blocked as the Wyoming Cowboys defeated the Falcons, 28-27, on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 17) at Doyt Perry Stadium.
The Falcons committed six turnovers and committed several key penalties. The team also had a blocked field goal in addition to the blocked extra point. Despite the penalties, Bowling Green showed moxie by nearly coming back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
In that quarter alone, with nothing to do but pass, Matt Schilz showed off his arm by passing for 215 yards. He completed 21 of 30 throws in the final 15 minutes. In the frame, Kamar Jorden caught five balls for 50 yards and a touchdown, while Eugene Cooper took in six passes for 56 yards.
The Schilz-to-Jorden 32-yard touchdown pass came with 4:16 left on the game clock and brought the Falcons to within seven points. After a costly offsides penalty gave Wyoming a first down and cost BGSU its three timeouts, the defense stood firm and forced a punt.
Bowling Green took over with 1:18 left in the game and needed 89 yards. Schilz accomplished that distance in just ten plays, using virtually all of the clock. His touchdown pass to Hutson in the back of the end zone made the score 28-27 for Wyoming. Falcon hopes ended when Wyoming's Gabe Knapton blocked the extra point attempt by Kyle Burkhardt.
The game started on a strong note for the Falcons. Schilz led the team as it stormed down the field in six plays on the game's opening drive. His 40-yard pass to Alex Bayer gave Bowling Green a 7-0 lead with just 2:39 gone in the game.
Bowling Green's defense dominated the quarter, giving up only 31 yards and one first down. The Falcons had a chance to extend their lead, but Schilz fumbled at the Wyoming two yard line – the first of many errors that cost the Orange and Brown dearly.
As the second quarter started, Schilz again took the Falcons deep into Wyoming territory, but an interception by Blair Burns killed the drive. Burns took the ball back into the Falcon side of the field, and Wyoming took only three plays to tie the game.
Two drives later, Wyoming coughed up the ball, and Schilz drove the Falcons 66 yards in 11 plays to give BGSU the lead once again. He hooked up with Jorden for a 13-yard pass to cap the drive.
From there, things went downhill for Bowling Green. The team gave up a 91-yard touchdown drive in nine plays to start the third quarter, then fumbled the ensuing kickoff. After holding Wyoming on downs inside five yard line, the Falcons suffered another fumble, this time by Anthon Samuel. Wyoming's Marqueston Huff returned the fumble for a touchdown and a 21-14 lead.
A blocked field goal and two more turnovers helped Wyoming extend their lead to 28-14 early in the fourth quarter.
Overall, Bowling Green outgained Wyoming 514-396. The Falcons had 437 yards passing and 77 more on the ground, compared to Wyoming's 267 passing and 129 rushing yards. BGSU had 28 first downs and were 8 for 16 on third down.
Schilz set career-highs for completions (34), attempts (55) and passing yards (437). He now has 986 yards and 11 touchdowns passing for the season.
Jorden had nine receptions for 101 yards and two touchdowns, while Eugene Cooper hauled in a career-high eight balls for 79 yards. Jordan Hopgood and Anthon Samuel had 12 carries each, for 48 and 44 yards, respectively.
Defensively, #Jerry “Boo Boo” Gates# had 9.5 tackles, including eight solos and a forced fumble.
Wyoming's Brett Smith passed for 248 yards and a touchdown to Dominic Rufran. Alvester Alexander and Ghaali Muhammad each had rushing touchdowns for the Cowboys. Blair Burns had five solo tackles, a fumble recovery, and two interceptions.
The Falcons drop to 2-1 on the season. Their next game will be next Saturday (Sept. 24) at Miami University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., and the contest will be televised on ESPN3.com.
