BGSU opens 2011-12 season by taking four singles, one doubles title
The Bowling Green State University tennis team began the 2011-12 season in style, capturing a total of five flight championships on Saturday (Sept. 17) at the BGSU Invitational. The two-day, nine-team tournament was held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, with some matches played at Bowling Green High School.

Juniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb and sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland all won singles crowns at the BGSU Invite, and Reuland teamed with senior Jessica Easdale for a doubles championship.
"I'm pleased with the competitiveness shown, and the results earned, by our team this weekend," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We battled all day yesterday (Friday) and today, fought through some adversity and came out on top."
Joining the Falcons in the tournament were Cleveland State, Detroit, Duquesne, Evansville, IPFW, IUPUI, Toledo and Xavier. Team scores were not kept, but champions were crowned at each of the eight singles and four doubles flights.
BGSU competitors combined to post a 27-6 record on the weekend. The seven Falcons went an aggregate 18-3 in singles and 9-3 in doubles. The three doubles teams that were comprised of two BGSU players combined to go 7-2, while one Falcon (Grubb) competed with a Duquesne player.
Reuland was the lone Falcon to go 6-0 on the weekend, as she won championships at both the fourth singles flight and the third level of doubles. Reuland also won a pair of titles last season at the BGSU Invitational, and she now has a perfect 12-0 record in the event in her collegiate career.
Each of the seven Falcons had a winning record on the weekend. Chiricosta, Easdale, Eccleston and Grubb each went 5-1 over the two days, while juniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson posted 4-2 records.
Reuland was never headed in her championship match on Saturday, losing only one game in a straight-sets win (6-1, 6-0) over IPFW's Raquel Vescovi. In doubles, the Falcon sophomore teamed up with Easdale for two victories in Saturday action. That duo downed an IUPUI team by an 8-2 margin in the semifinals before topping CSU's Lazaris/Sherwood team, 9-7, to take the title.
Chiricosta won her third straight-sets match of the tournament at the number-one flight, beating XU's Katie Pleiman by identical 6-2 scores to capture the title. In third-flight action, Eccleston rallied back after losing the opening set to post a win over Toledo's Alexa Pitt.
Grubb's title, at the eighth flight, was clinched with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over IUPUI's Danielle Haefele. Grubb lost a total of only 11 games in her six singles sets on the weekend.
Grubb, Eccleston and Reuland all won BGSU singles flight titles for the second-straight year.
At the second singles flight, Hill advanced to the championship match before falling to XU's Andrea Wolf. Easdale bounced back after losing a three-set match in her first contest at the fifth flight on Friday, posting a pair of relatively lopsided results to win the back draw.
Johnson, who lost in two closely-contested sets in Friday's semifinal round at the seventh flight, defeated Evansville's Emily Richardson to capture third place on Saturday.
Chiricosta and Hill finished third at the top doubles flight. That duo lost to Evansville's top team before posting an 8-3 win over UT's Cristello/Anonsen duo in the third-place match. At the second flight, Johnson and Eccleston advanced to the final before succumbing to UT's Coffman/Pitt tandem. That marked BGSU's only loss to the Rockets in six matches over the weekend.
At the fourth doubles flight, Grubb competed with Duquesne's Danialle Osio. That team lost a narrow 8-6 decision in their opening match on Friday, but posted back-to-back wins to capture the consolation bracket crown on Saturday.
BGSU's total of five flight titles led all teams. Xavier won a pair of championships, while Cleveland State, Duquesne, Evansville, IPFW and UT won one apiece.
On the weekend, BGSU competitors went 3-0 against both IPFW and IUPUI. The Falcons were 1-0 in matches vs. Detroit; 3-1 against CSU, Duquesne and Xavier; 4-1 vs. Evansville teams; and, as mentioned, 5-1 vs. fellow Mid-American Conference school Toledo. Those totals do not include Grubb's fourth-flight matches in doubles,
"We will be back at it on Monday, working hard and looking to build on this early-season success," said Dean.
The Falcons' next tourney will be the weekend after next, when BG heads to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the Fall MAC Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan from Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
