Kent, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team bounced back from its first loss of the year by sweeping Kent State Saturday evening 25-7, 25-22, 25-20. Ashley Dunn led a strong defensive effort as the Falcons cruised to victory.
Bowling Green set the tone early by dominating Kent State in the first set. In fact, the 25-7 win was the largest point differential win for the Falcons since NCAA volleyball moved to 25-point sets in 2008.
The Golden Flashes posted just four kills in the first frame and hit -.120. Bowling Green, on the other hand, hit .381 and was paced by Paige Penrod and Danielle Tonyan, who combined for seven kills. The Falcons scored the first three points of the set and never trailed, building an 11-4 lead and then scoring the final six points.
The second set was the only stanza in which Kent State ever had a lead, taking an early 8-4 advantage. However, Lauren Mizgalski terminated a pass that started a 10-0 run for the Falcons. When the dust settled, Bowling Green led 14-8 and Kent State never got back on even footing. The Golden Flashes did get within one at 22-21, but Kari Galen and Tonyan had back-to-back kills as the Falcons pulled out the win.
In the third set, Bowling Green jumped out to a 14-5 lead before a 6-1 Kent State run got the Golden Flashes back within four. However, the Falcons never let the set get any closer as Bowling Green hit .324 to win the match.
Tonyan ended with a team-high 12 kills and hit .348. Erica Fullenkamp added a team-best 21 assists and had eight digs. Ashley Dunn had 16 digs as the Falcons held a 44-31 edge in that statistic. As a team, Bowling Green hit .286 and held Kent State to .122 attacking.
Kent State falls to 7-10 overall and 0-2 in MAC play. Bowling Green, now 13-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action, will play at Wright State Tuesday at 7 p.m. before hosting Akron Friday night at 7 p.m. and Buffalo Saturday at 3 p.m.
