SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -- Rain forced cancellation of the first round and caused soggy playing conditions, but the Bowling Green State University men's golf team perservered to earn fifth place in a tightly-packed field after the first day of the 2011 Cardinal Intercollegiate.
The Falcons shot 294 on Monday (Sept. 26) at the par-72, 7,036-yard Cardinal Club Golf Course. They are tied for fifth place with Wisconsin, Austin Peay and Dayton. That group trails tournament host Louisville by two strokes and DePaul by four.
Bowling Green is one stroke ahead of four teams tied for ninth place. Marquette (13th) and Kansas (14th) are three and four strokes behind BGSU, respectively.
Arkansas-Little Rock (283) leads the tournament through 18 holes.
Parker Hewit, who placed 15th at this tournament in 2010, leads all Falcon golfers after carding a 70 on Monday. He is part of a four-way tie for eighth place after shooting 35 on both the front and back nine.
Charlie Olson continued the positive momentum he built at last week's John Piper Intercollegiate by scoring a 71 to tie his best round of the season. His one-under-par performance places him in a six-way tie for 12th.
Senior Drew Preston shot a 76 and is tied for 53rd in the 96-player field. Wes Gates (77) and Joe Cooper (81) completed the Bowling Green effort.
The final round of the Cardinal Intercollegiate, which is now a 36-hole event, will begin on Tuesday morning (Sept. 27). Complete results will be available at BGSUFalcons.com on Tuesday evening.
