SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team struggled on Tuesday and dropped several spots after ending the first round in tied fifth before finally resting in 13th place at the 2011 Cardinal Intercollegiate.
The Falcons continue to have consistency issues as a team. On Tuesday (Sept. 27), Bowling Green shot 308 over the tournament's final 18 holes. That marks a 14-shot increase over their score on Monday. After tying for fifth on Monday, the team featured the 14th-ranked round out of the 18 participating teams.
Bowling Green concluded the rain-shortened 36-hole event with a total of 602, finishing just ahead of Marquette (603), Murray State (604) and Cincinnati (607). The team was three strokes behind 12th-place Eastern Kentucky and trailed Kansas and Francis Marion by five.
Charlie Olson was the biggest individual bright spot for the Falcons. Playing on the par-72, 6,956--yard Cardinal Club course, Olson posted a final-round 74 to end the tournament with a composite 145. That effort resulted in a tie for 15th.
Parker Hewit had the day's biggest drop-off, as he carded an 81 one day after finishing the first 18 holes with a 70. His total of 151 earned a 41st place tie.
Drew Preston and Wes Gates alternated rounds of 76 and 77 on Monday and Tuesday to complete the event with matching scores of 153. Freshman Joe Cooper posted back-to-back 81s for a final tally of 162.
Arkansas-Little Rock won the team championship and featured the tournament's top two individuals. UALR scored 573 (283-290) thanks in large part to the 137 posted by medalist Nicklaus Benton (67-70) and the 139 scored by Alfred Kerstis (68-71).
The Falcons' final tournament of the fall takes place in Hebron, Ky. on Oct. 10 and 11 as Bowling Green competes in the Bearcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
