CAREER STATS OF 2011-12 FALCONS
QUICK HITS
• The Falcons are off to a 3-0 start in MAC play, with all three victories coming at home ... after posting wins over Kent State (76-57, Jan. 4) and Akron (62-58, Jan. 7), BGSU returned to the Stroh Center court and recorded a 61-49 win over Ohio on Thursday night (Jan. 12).
• BGSU has started MAC play with a 3-0 record for the seventh consecutive season ... the Falcons are looking to move to 4-0 in conference action for the sixth time in seven seasons ... BG had gotten off to at least a 4-0 league start in five consecutive seasons, before losing at Kent State in the fourth game of the MAC schedule last January ... over the last six years, the Falcons have started 7-0 or better four times.
• Junior Chrissy Steffen scored 18 points to pace three players in double figures in Thursday's win over Ohio ... redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers had a double-double for the third consecutive game, with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while freshman Jasmine Matthews added 10 points, including a pair of key three-point field goals as BG pulled away late.
• Leading by a 46-42 score with under eight minutes left, the Falcons reeled off 10-straight points as part of a game-ending 15-7 run ... Matthews began that 10-0 spurt with a three-pointer out of the 7:38 media timeout, and she hit another trey to put BG up by 15 points with just over three minutes remaining.
• Rogers had her double-double vs. Ohio after putting together a monster game in the win over Akron ... Rogers had 26 points and 14 rebounds, posting career-high totals in both categories, against the Zips ... she had a double-double in the second half alone, with 19 points and 10 boards after the intermission.
• Rogers, as mentioned, has had a double-double in each of the last three games, coinciding with the start of MAC play ... she has four double-doubles, both this season and in her collegiate career ... Rogers is averaging 19.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game over her first three MAC contests.
• Rogers is the first Falcon player to put together three consecutive double-doubles in 14 years, since Charlotta Jones had five in a row (Dec. 30, 1997, through Jan. 10, 1998) ... Jones' streak also began with the MAC opener.
• Let's take a moment to recognize the greatness that was Charlotta Jones, shall we? The 5-10, rail-thin forward had no fewer than 15 double-doubles in her senior year of 1997-98 ... she scored in double digits in every game that season, and averaged 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds as the Falcons went 21-8 and advanced to the WNIT.
• Back to 2011-12 ... Matthews and Rogers each played all 20 minutes of the second half on Thursday night, as the Falcons dialed up the defensive intensity after halftime ... BGSU held Ohio to just seven made baskets and a 29.2 percent field-goal percentage in the second period.
• Both Matthews and Rogers played a career-high 37 minutes against the Bobcats ... Rogers had played 35 minutes in the Kent State game, while Matthews' previous high had been 30 minutes played at Wyoming (Dec. 29).
• For the second game in a row, the Falcons held a team to its lowest offensive output of the season ... Akron had 58 points at the Stroh, for the Zips' lowest point total of the year ... then, Ohio was held under 50 points for the first time this season, with just 49 in Thursday's game.
• The Falcons, after beginning the season with a pair of losses, have won 13 of the last 14 games ... BG reeled off a seven-game win streak, suffered a two-point loss at Creighton (Dec. 18), and have won six consecutive contests since that setback.
• Should BGSU pick up a win at Buffalo, it would mark the third season in a row that the Falcons have had two win streaks of at least seven games ... last season, BG had a 15-game win streak as well as an 11-game streak ... two years ago, the Falcons put together a pair of eight-game streaks ... technically, BGSU did not have two seven-game win streaks in the 2008-09 season ... that's because the Falcons had one streak of 25-straight wins that extended from late November into early March.
• The Falcons have struggled to shoot the ball at times over the first three MAC games, but BGSU has made up for those shooting woes with relentless rebounding ... BG has shot a combined 36.6 percent in league play, but the Falcons had a total of 143 rebounds (47.7 per game) to the opponents' 97 (32.3 rpg) in that span.
• BG had 38 rebounds to Ohio's 28 on Thursday night ... that came on the heels of double-digit advantages on the boards against both Akron (53-41) and KSU (52-28) ... the Ohio game marked the 11th-straight time BG has held the advantage on the boards ... the Falcons had been outrebounded in each of the season's first five games ... BGSU is now 10-1 this season and 158-14 in the Miller Era when outrebounding the opponent.
• Coincidentally (or perhaps not), the Falcons' 11-game rebounding streak has come after freshman Kaila Hulls was unofficially named the team's 'rebounding coach' ... Hulls, who is sitting out the season due to injury, has had much more success in the 'rebounding coach' department than her predecessor, assistant coach Kevin Eckert.
• Matthews is not generally relied upon for her rebounding, but she has increased her production in that area since the calendar turned to January ... Matthews, who had a grand total of five rebounds in the first 13 games, had nine over the last three contests ... she has pulled down three boards in each of the MAC games to date.
• The Falcons are the winningest team in MAC history, and BGSU has become the first league women's hoops program to post 350 conference victories ... BG is now 351-145 in MAC regular-season games, for a winning percentage of 70.8% – the most wins and highest percentage of any conference team.
• After going with the same starting lineup for the first 10 games of the year, Miller made a change for the Madonna game on Dec. 21 ... Matthews joined senior Jessica Slagle, redshirt junior Danielle Havel, Steffen and Rogers in the starting five vs. the Crusaders ... Matthews now has started each of the last six games for the Brown and Orange.
• Matthews became the first freshman to start a game for BGSU in four seasons ... then-freshmen Lauren Prochaska and Crystal Murdaugh each started all 34 games in 2007-08, while Chelsea Albert made six starts that season.
