Falcons Down Duquesne, 5-2, in Dual-Match Opener

The Bowling Green State University tennis team began the dual-match portion of the schedule on a successful note, taking to the road and posting a 5-2 win at Duquesne University Saturday (Jan. 21). The match was held at Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh.
"We are glad to get that first 'W' under our belts," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "I felt we played a little nervous at the start, but after the first half of doubles, we were able to snap out of it."
BGSU captured that doubles point, winning by 8-3 scores at each of the top-two flights. Sophomore Nikki Chiricosta and junior Mary Hill picked up the win at the top flight, while juniors Maddy Eccleston and Jade Johnson were victorious at flight number two.
The BGSU duo of junior Katie Grubb and soph Emily Reuland lost in a tiebreaker, falling by a 9-8 score to DU's Tara Majdalani and Paula Gruber in third-flight action.
In singles play, the Brown and Orange won four of the six matches to seal the victory. Reuland lost only one game in her sweep of Gruber at the third flight, while senior Jessica Easdale dropped only three games in a sixth-flight victory against Majdalani. Reuland and Easdale each posted a 6-0 win in their second set.
Chiricosta won in straight sets at the top flight, downing Megan O'Sullivan by a 6-3, 6-2 result. Hill was victorious at the fourth level, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over DU's Judy Li.
"Jessica Easdale was fantastic for us today in singles, and we got good wins from Nikki, Mary and Emily as well," said Dean.
The Falcons' next action will come Friday night, as BGSU heads to the Queen City to face the University of Cincinnati. BG's first home dual match is set for Saturday, Feb. 4, when Chicago State comes to the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
