BGSU improves to 2-0 in dual matches with second-straight road win
The Bowling Green State University tennis team went on the road and picked up a win for the second-straight weekend. The Falcons moved to 2-0 in dual-match play with a 6-1 win over the University of Cincinnati Friday night (Jan. 27).
"This was a closer match than that 6-1 score would indicate," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "But, it was great to come away from this match with a victory."
At the Western Tennis and Fitness Club, the Falcons opened the night by winning all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Junior Katie Grubb and sophomore Emily Reuland picked up an 8-4 win at the third flight, and the other two matches finished shortly thereafter.
In second-flight action, juniors Maddy Eccleston and Jade Johnson teamed up for an 8-3 win, and sophomore Nikki Chiricosta and junior Mary Hill won by an identical 8-3 score at the top flight. Eccleston and Johnson rallied form a 3-0 deficit, winning eight consecutive games to capture their match.
In singles action, Grubb made quick work of Carly Wilson at the sixth flight, losing just one of 13 games in her sixth-flight sweep.
"Katie had strong play at the net in her singles match," said Dean. "She played very well tonight."
UC's Jasmine Lee downed Chiricosta at the top flight, but Reuland closed out a straight-sets win over Ashleigh Witte, winning a 7-6 decision in the second set at the third flight.
Senior Jessica Easdale earned the Falcons' match-clinching fourth point, with a win against Sierra Sullivan at the fifth flight. Easdale and Sullivan split their first two sets before the BG co-captain rolled to a 6-1 win in the third set.
Eccleston and Hill closed out their respective wins with third-set tiebreakers. Eccleston topped Kristina Georgieva in a lopsided opening set at the second flight, winning by a 6-1 count. Georgieva rallied for a narrow 7-6 victory in the next set, but Eccleston pulled out a 10-5 decision in the 'breaker.
At the fourth flight, Hill split her first two sets with Safiyya Ismail, before winning a 10-7 tiebreaker for the Falcons' fifth singles victory of the night.
Eccleston's doubles win was the 59th of her career, moving her into a tie for 15th place on that BGSU list. She is now deadlocked with Andrea Meister (2003-06) and Jenna Nussbaum (2005-08) on that chart, and is just one doubles win behind 14th-place Andrea Volle (2005-08).
Eccleston now has 52 career singles wins and 111 total victories, ranking 20th on both of those BGSU lists.
On the season, Eccleston and Reuland have identical 25-7 overall records to lead the Falcons. Hill is 24-9 this season to date, while Chiricosta has a 22-9 overall record. All seven players on the roster have a winning percentage of .708 or better this season.
The Falcons return to Northwest Ohio for a pair of matches against Windy City foes next weekend. BGSU will face Chicago State on Saturday (Feb. 4), with UIC in town the next day (Feb. 5). The Chicago State match will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, with the UIC contest scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start at the PTC.
