BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's swimming team closed out the 2011-12 regular season on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 28) with a 178-111 loss to Mid-American Conference foe Miami. The dual meet was held at Cooper Natatorium on the BGSU campus.
Alexis Kain led the Falcon effort as she played a role in four of BGSU's five event victories. Kain swept the breaststroke events for her two individual wins. In the 100-yard event, Kain finished in 1:04.69 and defeated Miami's Stacie Clagg by 1.31 seconds.
The time difference was even smaller in the 200-yard swim. To win that race, Kain posted a time of 2:22.42 to win by a virtual eyelash as Clagg was only two-tenths of a second behind her.
BGSU also swept the day's two relay events, and Kain swam the second leg for both winning teams. She joined with Emily Bennet, Alexa Harris and Vicky Yu to win the meet-opening 400 medley relay. The taem completed the relay in 3:52.01 and won by over two seconds.
Kain and Bennet swam with Sarah Reinink and Brittany Szekely in the 400 freestyle relay, and the group posted a winning time of 3:34.01.
Aside from swimming for the winning medley relay team, Harris earned the Falcons' other win on Saturday. She took top honors in the 200 individual medley after finishing in 2:14.51.
Bowling Green also earned five second-place finishes against Miami. Bennet posted runner-up swims in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, while Emily Waller earned second place in the 500- and 1650-yard freestyle. Senior Vicky Yu placed second in the 200 butterfly.
"We enjoyed our last dual meet of the season. We had a lot of close races this afternoon and got the opportunity to challenge our athletes against some of the best swimmers in the conference," head coach Petra Martin said. We are pleased with the way we swam, and everyone is excited to start getting ready for the MAC Championships."
The championship meet is all that remains for the Falcons in the 2011-12 season. That meet begins in slightly less than four weeks; the first day of the three-day meet is Thursday, Feb. 23. Bowling Green seeks to improve on last season, when the team tied for sixth. This year's meet will be hosted by the University of Akron.
