BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – After five months of training and competition, the summit of the 2011-12 season is in sight for the Bowling Green State University swimming team. Beginning on Thursday (Feb. 23), the Falcons will compete in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships, which will be held at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio.
Second-year head coach Petra Martin has steered a veteran group of swimmers with the goal of steady improvement in the conference. At the 2011 championship meet, Martin led the Falcons to a tie for sixth place, which was the team's best championship finish in three years. The team set four school records and won its first medal (silver, 200 freestyle relay) since 2009.
In 2012, Bowling Green seeks to break a stranglehold on the top half of the standings held by the MAC's perennial powers. Miami, Ohio, Toledo and Eastern Michigan have combined to finish as the top four teams in each of the last five championship meets; the Falcons were the last team outside of that group to place in the top half of the eight-team field, when they finished fourth in 2006.
This year's squad appears positioned to make that run. Over the last three seasons, nine different members of the current roster have participated in one or more school record-breaking events. Several also have medal winning experience. As a group, the Falcons have set 14 school records and won four medals at the last three MAC Championship meets.
Leading this group are Alexis Kain and senior Vicky Yu. In 2011, Kain broke school records in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and also swam on the record-setting 400 yard medley relay team. Kain enters this year's championship meet as the owner of the MAC's best time in both breaststroke events and will seek BGSU's first gold medal since 2009.
That gold medal was won by Yu in the 200 yard butterfly. Yu owns the BGSU record in that event and tied for the record in the 100-yard butterfly. She also has helped two different relay teams set current BGSU records as part of her championship meet history. This season, Yu is among the MAC's five best times in both butterfly events and ranks third in the 200 yard butterfly.
Bowling Green will also seek success in the sprint freestyle events, where Sarah Reinink, Brittany Szekely and Emily Bennet are each among the MAC's top 15 in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Reinink's best time in the 100 free ranks fifth in the conference.
In the distance freestyle events, Emily Waller has season-best times which rank fifth in the MAC in both the 500- and 1650-free.
The Falcons relay teams have a string of recent record-breaking success to live up to, as relay records have fallen in each of the last three seasons. This year, BGSU teams are again at the top of the MAC with their best times; in particular, the Falcons' 400 medley relay team at the TPSC Invitational posted the MAC's second-best time of the season.
This year's MAC Championships will pose a new challenge for each of the league's eight teams, as the format will be different than in years' past. The MAC has adopted a three-day format for the championship meet as opposed to four-day formats in previous years.
The meet begins on Feb. 23 at 11:00 a.m. with the preliminaries in the 50- and 500-yard freestyle and the 200 yard individual medley. The evening session, which begins at 7:00 p.m., features the finals in each of the aforementioned swimming events, as well as the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay.
On Friday (Feb. 24), the preliminaries again begin at 11:00 a.m. and feature the 100 yard races in the butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke events. Swimmers will also compete in the 200 yard freestyle and 400 yard individual medley. Those events transition to finals in the 7:00 p.m. evening session. The evening also includes two more relays – the 200 medley and 800 freestyle.
The final day of the meet (Feb. 25) features four preliminary events at 11:00 a.m., and those include the 100 yard freestyle and the 200-yard races in the butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke. The evening session kicks off earlier, at 5:00 p.m., to accommodate time trials in the 1650 freestyle. Senior recognition takes place at 6:45 p.m., before swimming resumes at 7:00 p.m. The finals of the events races earlier in the day, including the 1650 freestyle, are part of the final session. The Saturday evening races include the final relay of the meet (400 freestyle relay).
