Phil Steele Magazine, one of the nation's most informative college football publications, has named seven members of the Bowling Green State University football team to its mid-season All-MAC squad.
Alex Bayer and Chris Jones earned first-team honors, while Anthon Samuel and Dominic Flewellyn earned second team and Ted Ouellet, Dwayne Woods and Cameron Truss were all named to the third team.
At the mid-way point of the season Bayer has 20 receptions for 263 yards and two touchdowns. This past weekend at Akron he was named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week after recording five catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns in the 24-10
win versus the Zips. Through just six games Bayer has nearly matched his single season career-best numbers. As a freshman he ended the year with 22 receptions for 298 yards.
What new can be said about Jones that has not already been discussed? He currently leads the conference in sacks (6.5) and is second in tackles for loss (10.0). Jones also anchors a defense that ranks first in the MAC in points (20.3) and yards per game (343.0) allowed. The senior has been named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week twice this year after recording 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks versus Idaho and 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks versus Toledo. The Brownsburg, Ind., native will enter Saturday's contest with a sack in five straight games.
Samuel is nearly on pace to finish the year with over 1,000 yards, a mark he just missed as a freshman in 2011. The sophomore has 84 carries for 494 yards and a career-high eight touchdowns. He also has three 100-yard games in 2012 and has scored a touchdown in five of six contests this season. His top performance was in week five versus Rhode Island in which he ran for 117 yards and three touchdowns.
Flewellyn has started all six games for the BGSU offensive line and has made 26 straight starts for the Orange and Brown. Flewellyn and the entire offensive line flexed their muscles in the 24-10 win last week at Akron. With BGSU trailing 10-0 as the third quarter began, Flewellyn helped BGSU run for 226 second half yards.
Ouellet, who plays alongside Chris Jones, may get over-shadowed, but he is quietly having the best year of his career. The junior came into the season with career numbers in tackles (21), tackles for loss (1.5) and sacks (1.0). He is on pace to smash each and every one of those numbers. Through six games Ouellet has 21 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks in 2012 alone.
Woods has started 30 straight games for the Falcons and has 296 tackles and 23.5 tackles for loss in his career. In 2012 he has 27 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery in 2012.
Truss leads BGSU with 38 tackles and three pass break-ups. Last weekend in Akron he had a career-high 10 tackles as BGSU held the league's No. 1 offense to just 10 points and 316 total yards.
