Falcons Fall To No. 10 Union, 5-3

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team (0-1-1) lost to Union College (1-1-0) Friday night, falling to the Dutchmen by a score of 5-3.
Sophomores Ryan Carpenter, Adam Berkle and freshman Mark Cooper scored in the contest, while senior Andrew Hammond stopped 19-of-24 shots
Special teams we're the factor in the Falcons' first home contest of 2012-13, with the Dutchmen going 3-3 on the power play. Union also scored two short-handed markers, giving them five special teams' goals on the night. Bowling Green also scored on the power play, going 1-for-5 in the game.
The Falcons came out strong against the No. 10 ranked team in the nation, scoring the first goal of the game just 3:16 into the first period.
Sophomore defenseman Connor Kucera collected the puck at the blue line, and sent it down low to Carpenter behind the net. Carpenter found Berkle cutting into the slot, before Berkle deked out the Union goaltender and slid the puck into the net for his first goal of the season.
Bowling Green struck again just over three minutes later, putting the score at 2-0 in favor of the Orange and Brown.
Sophomore Mike Sullivan banked the puck high off the boards in the neutral zone, finding the stick of fellow sophomore Dajon Mingo near center ice. Carpenter cut into the Union zone, and accepted a pass from Mingo before firing a wrist shot past Union's Troy Grosenick for his first goal of the season.
The Dutchmen answered back before the closing of the opening frame, scoring two –straight power-play goals to tie the game at 2-2.
Union's Sebastian Gingras struck just over 15 minutes into the first, sending a wrist shot past Hammond for the Dutchmen's first goal of the game. Union's Josh Jooris scored the second power-play goal, deflecting a shot on the side of the cage less than two minutes later.
The Dutchmen would score the only goal of the second period, netting a third power-play goal in their third opportunity.
Union pulled away in the final frame, scoring two short-handed tallies under a minute apart to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
With six minutes left in the contest, the Falcons battled back, recording a power-play goal to pull within two.
Sophomore Dan DeSalvo collected a pass and fired the puck on the Union net, before junior Bryce Williamson caught a piece of the puck in front. The puck made its way to the left side of the Union crease, where Cooper was waiting to burry his first collegiate goal.
Bowling Green was unable to solve Grosenick for the remainder of the contest, giving Union the 5-3 win.
The Falcons are back in action Saturday night, when they take on Union in the second half of their two-game series. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m.
