Opening Strong
Sophomore Ryan Carpenter recorded an assist in the Falcons' 2-2 tie against Niagara Saturday night, marking the second straight season Carpenter has recorded a point in the season opening game. Carpenter recorded a goal and an assist last year against UConn, making him the first freshman to score in an opening game since Kevin Schmidt in 2005-06 against Merrimack. Wojtala's tally Saturday night also secured him a point in two-straight season openers.
Similar Result
Bowling Green's 2-2 contest Saturday night marked the second straight tie against out-of-conference foe Niagara. The Falcons tied the Purple Eagles 3-3 at the BGSU Ice Arena in 2008. The series is now gridlocked at 2-2-2 all time.
Power Play Numbers
The Falcons took advantage one time out of the seven chances they we're given on the power play Saturday night, giving Bowling Green a 14.2 percent conversion rate on the young season. The Orange and Brown ranked last in the league during the 2011-12 campaign, converting on only 8.9 percent of their total chances.
Goal Numbers
The Falcons' two-goal output Saturday night was actually higher than their goals-per-game average from last season. Bowling Green averaged 1.93 goals per game last season, and only 1.43 goals per game in conference play.
On The Plus Side
Freshman Ben Murphy and sophomores Dan DeSalvo and Mike Sullivan each finished Saturday night's contest with a plus -1 rating. At the end of last year, only three Falcons finished with a positive on-ice rating. DeSalvo led the team with a plus -4, while Ryan Carpenter and Connor Kucera finished with a plus -2.
Shea Scores
Senior Bobby Shea's goal Saturday night was the only point recorded by a defenseman in the game. Shea finished last season with a career-best nine points last season, tied for the team lead amongst defensemen with Marcus Perrier. Shea's four goals in 2011-12 also led the team.
OIT Exhibition
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team dominated the Ontario Institute of Technology Sunday night, defeating the Ridgebacks by a score of 9-1. Sophomores Ryan Carpenter and Dajon Mingo each scored two goals, while sophomore defenseman Mike Sullivan led the team with three assists. Senior Andrew Hammond stopped all five shots he faced in the first two periods, while freshman Tommy Burke allowed one goal on 10 shots in the third frame.
Frozen Four Foes
Union College is the first of two Frozen Four competitors the Falcons will play this season. The second is CCHA foe Ferris State in a home series set for Nov. 16-17.
Union in the OT
The Falcons are 1-0-1 all time against Union in overtime, earning a tie in the second game of a home series in 2003, and an OT victory at the 2003 RPI Holiday Tournament. The Falcons are 3-1-1 against Union in the all-time series, winning the last game, 1-0 in 2004.
Home Sweet Home
The weekend series against Union marks the second straight out-of-conference opponent Bowling Green will play, and the first at home. The only other non-CCHA school the Falcons play at home this season is Niagara, on Dec. 29.

Union College comes to Bowling Greem raked No. 10 in the country. Union started the season ranked No. 5, before losing to Merrimack College, 4-1, last week. Bowling Green defeated several ranked teams last season, including No. 2 Ferris State last season in the CCHA playoffs. The most recent Falcon victory at the BGSU Ice Arena included the Orange and Brown's 4-3 win over No. 3 Michigan on Frb. 24, 2012.

Penalty Kill Success
The Falcons killed all three Niagara power plays Saturday night, and prevented OIT from scoring with the man advantage on seven attempts Sunday night. Bowling Green ranked ninth in the CCHA last season on the penalty kill, killing 82.5 percent of their opponents' power-play chances overall last season. In CCHA play, the Falcons were successful on 81.3 percent of their penalty kills, also ranking ninth.

Union In The Poll
The Union College men's ice hockey team was ranked No. 5 in the first USCHO.com poll to start the season.
The No. 5 ranking was the highest preseason ranking in the program's 22 year history at the Division I level. Union has appeared in the USCHO.com poll for 64 consecutive weeks since the Dec. 7, 2009 rankings, extending a school record. The Dutchmen earned 789 points in the poll, and were the highest ranked ECAC Hockey team, above No. 6 Cornell (631 points).
Last season, in Rick Bennett's first year as head coach, Union (26-8-7, 14-4-4 ECAC Hockey) navigated a demanding schedule to earn its second consecutive Cleary Cup, and first ever Whitelaw Cup as ECAC Hockey regular season and tournament champions.
Union earned a trip to the Frozen Four with wins over UMass-Lowell and Michigan State in the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Ferris State, 3-1, in the national semifinals.
Union returns 22 letterwinners from a team that led the nation in scoring defense (1.83 goals allowed per game), finished sixth in scoring offense (3.49 goals per game), and had the nation's No. 4 power play (24.2%) and No. 12 penalty kill (84.5%).
Union Last Week
Junior defenseman Mat Bodie scored, but the No. 5/5 Union College men's ice hockey team (0-1) fell, 4-1, to Merrimack College (1-0) in front of 2,087 fans on opening night at Messa Rink.
Merrimack forward Josh Myers scored twice early in the third period in a span of 2:19 to break a 1-1 tie, and Kyle Singleton added an empty net goal at 18:57 to seal the win for the Warriors, who were led by an outstanding effort in net by Sam Marotta (32 saves).
Junior goaltender Troy Grosenick stopped 23 shots in net for the Dutchmen, who lost their season opener for the first time since the start of the 2005-06 season, a 6-1 loss to Colorado College on October 7, 2005.
