Lichtensteiger Selected For Ed Block Courage Award
December 19, 2012 | Football
The Washington Redskins announced on Tuesday (Dec. 18) that former Falcon, Kory Lichtensteiger, had been named the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award. The award is given annually to a player from each National Football League team who displays courage in the face of adversity.
Lichtensteiger, who played at Bowling Green from 2003-07, was drafted in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.
After playing in just 16 games (no starts) in his first two seasons, Kory has found a home with the Washington Redskins. Since coming to Washington in 2010, he has started 33-of-35 games he has played in. His season was cut short in 2011 due to a severe knee injury.
That was the reason Lichtensteiger was given the award. “Leading into surgery and following surgery, Kory was dedicated to his rehabilitation program and getting himself ready for the following year,” Redskins Head Athletic Trainer Larry Hess said.
Lichtensteiger, the starting left guard, is part of an offensive line unit that has helped the Redskins lead the NFL in rushing yards this season, averaging 164.8 yards per game. “Kory is a warrior,” Redskins Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “He not only came back strong and healthy from a torn ACL in less than a year, but he tore his MCL in that knee as well. To be playing at the high level he is, speaks to the hard work he put in during the offseason.”
The Courage Award is named after Ed Block, the longtime head athletic trainer of the Baltimore Colts who was a pioneer in his profession and a respected humanitarian.
