Need To Know
• The Bowling Green State University football team finished the regular season with eight wins, the most wins since the 2007 Falcons also went 8-4. BGSU was 6-2 in conference play, its best MAC finish since the 2009 Falcons also ended the year at 6-2 in MAC play.
• In three years the Falcons have improved from a 2-10 season, to a 5-7 campaign, to the 8-4 season this year.
• BGSU is one of the hottest teams in the nation, having won seven of its last eight contests after opening the season 1-3.
• The Falcons are just one of five teams from the MAC to earn at least two bowl appearances since 2009. BGSU is joined by Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo and Central Michigan.
• Offensively the Falcons are led by third year starting quarterback Matt Schilz. The junior will be making his 35th start (31 consecutive) and has thrown for 7,673 yards and 50 touchdowns in his BGSU career.
• Anthon Sameul, who was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2011, has run for 966 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. He is 34 yards shy of becoming just the eighth running back in BGSU history to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a single season. He also ranks 15th in school history with 1,810 rushing yards.
• Defensively the Falcons rank seventh in the nation in total defense, allowing just 289.7 yards per game. They are seventh is pass defense (173.0), ninth in scoring (15.8) and 14th in rush defense (116.7).

The San Jose State Series
The Dec. 27 meeting between BGSU and SJSU will be the first contest between the two programs. This will be the eighth time in BGSU history in which the Falcons faced a team from the WAC. BGSU is 2-5 all-time versus the conference, with the only wins coming in 2011 and 2012 versus Idaho.
Versus Ranked Opponents
The Falcons are 0-5 under Dave Clawson versus ranked opponents, including 0-2 this year. BGSU trailed 17-14 entering the fourth quarter versus Florida and were tied 24-24 early in the fourth quarter versus Kent State this season.
vs. #4 Boise State (2009) L, 49-14

at #22 West Virginia (2011) L, 55-10
at #23 Florida L, 27-14

The Last Bowl Game
Speaking of Idaho, the last time BGSU participated in a bowl game was the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl versus the Vandals in Boise, Idaho. The Falcons dropped that contest 43-42, with Idaho converting a two-point conversion with four seconds remaining in the game.
Not Many Left
Just two Falcons started in that 2009 bowl game that are expected to start in the 2012 Military Bowl as well. Chris Jones and Jordon Roussos both started along the defensive line versus Idaho in 2009. Both earned All-MAC this year, Jones as a defensive lineman and Roussos as an offensive lineman. Wait, What? That's right, in the middle of the 2010 season Roussos was moved to the other side of the ball and has started at right tackle ever since. Other Falcons that saw action in 2009 and are still active in 2012 are: Tim Moore, Chip Robinson and Dwayne Woods.
Bowling Falcons
The Military Bowl will be the Falcons 10th bowl in school history, third-most in the Mid-American Conference. Overall the Falcons are 4-5 in bowl contests.

Star Is Born?
Chris Gallon was having a solid freshman campaign entering the Kent State contest back on Nov. 17 with 32 receptions for 369 yards and four touchdowns ... then the KSU game happened. Gallon recorded career-bests in catches (10), yards (213) and touchdowns (2), adding the two longest catches of his career (72 and 81), both resulting in touchdowns.
Gallon's 213 receiving yards are the most ever by a Falcon inside Doyt Perry Stadium and are the fourth-most in school history, trailing only Freddie Barnes (278, 219) and Robert Redd (215).
Samuel.1000
Anthon Samuel, who has only played in 20 career games (missed three games in 2011 one in 2012 due to injury) has already surpassed the 1,000 yard career rushing mark, becoming just the 35th Falcon in school history to do so. Samuel currently ranks 15th in school history with 1,810 rushing yards.

Big D in BG
Throughout the season the BGSU defense had some remarkable statistics. Below are just a few of the tid-bits.
* The BGSU defense had a five-game span from Sept. 29 through Oct. 27 in which they allowed just 33 points, and three touchdowns. During that same span the Falcons added three defensive touchdowns, to match the total scores allowed.
* BGSU went nine straight quarters without allowing a touchdown, holding Miami (Oct. 13) scoreless in the fourth quarter and then pitching a shutout (24-0) at UMass and holding Eastern Michigan to just three points (24-3). That span stretched to 149:59 before Ohio scored a touchdown on its opening drive on Nov. 7.
* The defense added a stretch of 225:29 without allowing an extra point. That span, of nearly four full games dated from Oct. 6 at Akron, until at Ohio on Nov. 7.
* The Falcons have allowed one touchdown or less in five of 12 games this season. BGSU is 5-0 in those contests.
• Defensively the Falcons will enter the bowl contest, having forced a three-and-out or a turnover in 43 of the last 84 drives, dating back to the second half of the Akron contest on Oct. 6.
Monster of the MAC
Chris Jones was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year (and first-team All-American by the FWAA), announced by the league office on Nov. 28. Jones is just the third Falcon to ever earn the award, and the first Falcon to do so since Vince Palko won the award in 1993 and 1994. The only other Falcon to accomplish this feat was Phil Villapiano in 1970.
Jones currently ranks tied for fourth in the nation with 12.5 sacks and is tied for eighth with 19.0 tackles for loss, both career-bests for the defensive tackle. Jones added 41 tackles, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, five quarterback hurries and a pass break-up. He had a sack in 8-of-12 games and recorded a tackle for loss in 10 contests.
Doesn't Seem Possible
While most find it hard to believe that a defensive tackle has 12.5 sacks on the season all by himself, most may even find it harder to believe that Chris Jones' 12.5 sack are more than five teams have for the entire year! That's right Jones' 12.5 sacks are more than any of these teams:
Chris Jones - 12.5
Fla. Atlantic - 12.0
Kansas - 12.0
New Mexico St. - 10.0
Eastern Michigan - 7.0
Boston College - 6.0
Jones'n For Sacks
For the third straight year, Chris Jones has led the Falcons in sacks. The senior led BGSU with 6.0 sacks in 2010 and 8.5 sacks in 2011. This year his 12.5 sacks not only lead the team, they also nearly lead the nation. The defensive tackle has 28.0 sacks in his career, and is beginning to stalk Kevin O'Brien's BGSU sack record of 31.0 from 1989-92.
BGSU Career Sack Leaders
Kevin O'Brien (1989-92) 31.0
Chris Jones (2009-PR) 28.0
Diyral Briggs (2005-08) 26.0
Devon Parks (2003-06) 22.0
BGSU Single Season Sack Records
Kevin O'Brien (1992) 19.0
Chris Jones (2012) 12.5
Diyral Briggs (2008) 9.5
Among Defensive Tackles
Only three defensive tackles rank in the top-50 among the nation's sack leaders, and BGSU's Chris Jones is one of them.
Chris Jones (BGSU) 12.5
Will Sutton (Arizona St.) 10.5
Travis Raciti (SJSU) 7.5
Under Pressure
Chris Jones leads a defense that has been getting after the quarterback this season. In fact, the Falcons are ninth in the country and first in the MAC with 37 sacks (3.1/game). Of the 37 sacks, 24 have come up front on the defensive line.
Sacks By Position
Defensive Line - 24.0
Linebackers - 9.5
Secondary - 3.5
I Got It!
That same pressure has also started to produce turnovers. The Falcons, which rank fifth in turnover margin (+4) and fifth in turnovers forced (21) in the MAC, forced three turnovers versus Miami, four versus UMass, another three versus Eastern Michigan and three more versus Kent State.
Defense ... Clap, Clap
That pressure has helped the BG defense get off the field in a hurry. Dating back to the second half with Akron, the Falcon defense has either forced a turnover or a three-and-out in 43 of 84 drives.
Bring The Wood(s)
Middle linebacker Dwayne Woods has surpassed 300 career tackles. The senior has 329 career stops, recording 24 as a freshman in 2009, 134 in 2010, 111 in 2011 and 59 this season.
All Alone
In his career BooBoo Gates now owns two kick returns for touchdowns, one punt return for a score and has two pick-6's in his career, becoming the first Falcon in school history to own touchdown returns via kick, punt and interception returns.
Very Special Teams
Since head coach Dave Clawson arrived at Bowling Green, he and assistant coach Adam Scheier, have found a way to get the most out of the BGSU special teams. In four years Scheier's special teams have:
• Three kick returns for touchdowns.
• Three punt returns for scores.
• Have blocked 13 kicks.
• Produced two All-MAC returners (BooBoo Gates and Eugene Cooper).
• Produced two All-MAC Punters (Brian Wright and Brian Schmiedebusch x2)
• Successfully converted on two fake punts.
