Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team held Wright State scoreless over the final 5:47 to defeat the Raiders 54-41 Monday night in the Stroh Center. A'uston Calhoun had 17 second-half points to help the Falcons break away from a 22-22 halftime tie.
Bowling Green used two second-half runs, one sparked by the offense and one by the defense, to move back to .500 at 4-4 on the season.
Trailing 27-24 after Wright State's Cole Darling buried a three-pointer with 16:20 to play, Bowling Green scored on its next eight possessions to build a 10-point lead. Calhoun got things started with a pair of free-throws but Wright State answered with another three to take a 30-26 lead.
Calhoun then scored on an offensive rebound putback before the Raiders' Reggie Arceneaux made a lay-up to push the lead back to four. On the next trip down the floor, Luke Kraus was fouled shooting a three-pointer and made all three free-throws. Wright State got a jumper from A.J. Pacher to take a 34-31 advantage but the Falcons then reeled off 13 straight points.
Richaun Holmes finished back-to-back three-point plays and James Erger stroked home a three-pointer. Calhoun then made a jumper and connected on two free-throws on the next possession to give Bowling Green a 44-34 lead with 9:43 to go.
Wright State would make one last rally, scoring seven in a row to close to within three with 5:47 to play. That's when the Falcons put the game away with defense.
The Raiders did not score a point the rest of the way and Calhoun drove the final dagger home on a three-pointer as the shot clock was running out with 3:19 to go that made it 50-41. Four Calhoun free-throws down the stretch iced the contest and the 54-41 victory.
Along with his 19 points, Calhoun added eight rebounds and made all 12 of his free-throw attempts. He was the leader at the stripe for a team that went 19-of-21 on the evening, holding Wright State to just six free-throw attempts. Jordon Crawford added 11 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Richaun Holmes had a career-high nine points to go with four rebounds and three blocked shots. Anthony Henderson came off the bench for four points, five rebounds and a career-best four steals.
Bowling Green shot just 33 percent from the floor and made only 3-of-16 three-pointers. But the Falcons held Wright State to just three offensive rebounds and had a 35-26 edge on the glass. Bowling Green also forced 17 Raider turnovers, five more than the Falcons committed. Those two factors resulted in nine more shot attempts and 15 more free-throw attempts for the contest.
BGSU improved to 3-1 in the Stroh Center on the year and 2-2 against Horizon League opponents in non-conference play. Wright State falls to 5-3 with the loss. The Falcons will remain at home to host Samford Saturday at 2 p.m.
