CAREER STATS OF 2011-12 FALCONS
QUICK HITS
• The Falcons defeated Buffalo, 62-52, at the Stroh Center on Wednesday night (Feb. 15) ... senior Jessica Slagle scored a game-high 19 points, and went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the victory, while redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers and junior Chrissy Steffen each had a double-double.
• The win over UB clinched a top-four spot in the regular-season standings, and gives the Falcons a berth in the league tournament quarterfinals ... in effect, BG has earned a 'double bye' and, with four games left in the regular season, the Falcons are looking to secure a 'triple bye' and a berth into the semifinals of the tourney.
• Under the new MAC Tournament format, the top-four seeds receive multiple byes in 2012 ... the third and fourth seeds will earn berths in the quarterfinals, with seeds one and two being placed directly into the semifinal round ... put another way, a team seeded first or second will need to win only two MAC Tournament games to capture the title, while the third or fourth seed would need three wins ... any team seeded fifth through 12th will need to reel off five consecutive wins to capture the tourney crown ... seeding is based on conference winning percentage, regardless of division.
• Currently, BGSU sits atop the MAC at 11-1 ... Eastern Michigan and Toledo are a game back with 10-2 records, while Miami is fourth at 8-4 ... Saturday's opponent, Akron, has a 6-6 record, as does Northern Illinois, tying the Zips and Huskies for fifth place in the overall standings ... BG is five games clear of UA and NIU with just four games left, clinching no worse than fourth for the Falcons.
• In the East Division race, the Brown and Orange sit three games ahead of second-place Miami ... BG currently owns the tiebreaker with the RedHawks by virtue of a 61-58 win in Oxford last month (Jan. 19), but the teams have one more meeting scheduled, as MU comes to the Stroh Center next weekend.
• The Falcons' win over Buffalo came after BG had lost to a MAC opponent for the first time in over a year ... host Toledo scored the game's last eight points to post a 52-50 win over the Brown and Orange last Saturday afternoon (Feb. 11) in the Glass City.
• The loss at UT ended a number of impressive winning streaks for the Falcons ... it snapped an overall 13-game winning streak ... BGSU had won 18 consecutive MAC regular-season games, and the Falcons had captured 21-straight games against conference foes (including regular-season and tournament contests) prior to Saturday's loss ... BG's last loss to a MAC team had come on Jan. 29, 2011, at Western Michigan.
• Additionally, the Falcons had won eight-straight road games against MAC foes since that WMU game ... BG's closest call in that road winning streak, and the Falcons' narrowest escape in the entire 21-game MAC win streak, came in the team's last trip to Akron.
• In last year's meeting at the JAR, BGSU's Lauren Prochaska hit a corner three with just two-tenths of a second on the clock, giving the Falcons a 47-45 win (Feb. 22, 2011) ... Prochaska's heroics came after UA's Rachel Tecca had connected on a short jumper with just 8.7 seconds left.
• BG has won 18 consecutive series meetings with the Zips, but the Falcons' last two victories have come by a total of just six points ... in this season's first matchup, BGSU edged the Zips by a 62-58 final at the Stroh Center (Jan. 7, 2012) ... UA's point total in that game remains the highest by a MAC opponent against the Falcons in the brief history of the Stroh.
• Overall, the Falcons have allowed the opponent to score as many as 70 points just three times in the last 58 games (since the start of the 2010-11 campaign) ... and, BG won all three of those games ... BGSU has yet to allow as many as 70 points in a regulation game this season ... last year, the Falcons allowed 72 points vs. both Akron – a 90-72 BG win at venerable Anderson Arena – and Central Michigan in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament (an 80-72 Falcon victory).
• This season, CMU is the only team to reach 70 points against the Brown and Orange, and the Chippewas needed overtime to do so ... the teams were tied at 64-64 at the end of regulation late last month (Jan. 28), before the Falcons went on to a 77-72 victory in Mount Pleasant.
• BGSU has held the opponent to fewer than 60 points in 20 of this season's first 25 games, including in 10 of the 11 MAC games to date (all but that CMU OT contest) ... the Falcons have held the foes under 50 points on six occasions this year.
• At the other end of the court, BGSU is 12-0 this season when scoring at least 70 points ... the Falcons are 31-0 since the start of last season when reaching the 70-point mark, and BG is 76-1 when scoring 70 over the last three-plus years.
• The results have been good even if the Falcons can get to just 54 points this season ... BG is 21-0 when scoring at least 54 points, and the Falcons are 0-4 when the offense is held under that total ... BGSU is averaging an even 70.0 points per game in the 21 wins, and just 47.0 ppg in the four losses.
• The Falcons have an overall record of 49-9 since the start of the 2010-11 season ... one of those nine losses came to Georgia Tech in the NCAA Championships ... of the eight regular-season setbacks, six have come by one or two points ... BGSU is 27-4 against MAC teams since the beginning of last season ... three of those four losses have been by a combined four points.
• BGSU head coach Curt Miller and his staff are performing one of their top coaching jobs in their decade-plus at BGSU, having orchestrated this season's success with a very youthful squad ... nine players on the roster are either freshmen or sophomores ... the Falcons lost six players, including four starters, from a year ago ... that group of graduates combined for nearly 5,500 points, 2,400 rebounds and 1,000 assists in their BGSU careers.
• Miller and the Falcons went 11-21 in MAC play in his first two seasons at BGSU ... in the eight-plus seasons since that time, BGSU has gone 121-19 in MAC regular-season games.
• The 2011-12 campaign marks the fourth time in the last seven years that BG began conference action with at least 10-straight victories ... BGSU went a perfect 16-0 in MAC play in 2005-06, and the Falcons won the first 14 league contests in both 2006-07 and '08-09 ... BG was 10-0 in the league prior to last Saturday's setback at UT.
• Steffen is closing in on the top 10 on BGSU's career list for three-point field goals made ... the junior now has hit 118 triples in her BG tenure, good for the 11th-highest total in school history ... she trails 10th-place Lindsey Goldsberry (2005-09) by five treys.
• The Falcons have won 20 games in a season for the 17th time, the highest total of any MAC program ... BGSU has won at least 20 games in each of the last nine seasons, extending the program's MAC record for consecutive seasons of such sustained success.
• In exactly one month from the Akron game, the Stroh Center will host the first and second rounds of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship ... the first-round games are set for Sunday, March 18, with the second-round contest scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 ... for much more information, or to order tickets, log on to the web at BGSUFalcons.com.
