BGSU wins third road match in four tries this season
The Bowling Green State University tennis team won on the road for the third time in four tries this season, posting a 5-2 decision against Cleveland State University Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25). The non-conference dual match was held at Paramount Tennis Club.
The win improved BGSU to 4-3 in dual matches, and snapped a three-match losing streak. Cleveland State fell to 5-4.
Junior co-captain Maddy Eccleston and sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland each went 2-0 on the day, while senior co-captain Jessica Easdale and junior Mary Hill had wins as well.
The Falcons took the first point of the match with wins at the top-two doubles flights. Eccleston and Reuland teamed up for an 8-2 win at the number-one flight, while the Chiricosta/Hill duo posted an 8-1 victory at the second level. The third-flight match saw the CSU combo of Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek pick up an 8-4 victory over juniors Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson.
In singles action, Chiricosta bested CSU's Catrine Bjerrehus, a three-time All-Horizon League First-Team selection, in straight sets at the top flight. The BG sophomore, a native of nearby Avon Lake, Ohio, won the first set, 6-3, before outlasting Bjerrehus by a 7-5 result in the second flight.
Eccleston was dominant in her win at the second flight, sweeping Lazaris by identical 6-1 scores, while Reuland topped Kara Sherwood in three sets at the third flight. Reuland won her penultimate set by a 6-0 final.
Easdale swept Mengdi Liu in sixth-flight action, losing a total of just six games.
CSU's Alex Power eked out a win over Hill at the fourth flight. After Power's 6-4 victory in the opening set, the two split 12 games in the second set before Power won the tiebreaker to take the decision. Janek defeated Johnson in fifth-flight action for the Vikings' other point.
The Falcons are now idle from competition for several weeks, until a trip to Las Vegas, Nev., for a pair of neutral-site matches. BGSU will face Houston (March 18) and Kansas (March 19) on back-to-back days during that trip.
