BGSU faces Kansas Monday in Vegas
The Bowling Green State University tennis team won the doubles point, but the University of Houston rallied back to capture five singles contests and the match Sunday night (March 18) in Las Vegas, Nev.
The win improved the Cougars to 7-6 in dual matches, while the Falcons fell to 4-4 on the season.
Head coach Penny Dean's doubles lineup included three teams who were playing together for the first time this season, and two of those three tandems picked up wins vs. the Cougars. At the top flight, sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland picked up an 8-4 win, while juniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb were victorious at flight number two. Eccleston and Grubb, each in their third season with the Falcons, were playing as a duo for the first time in their respective BGSU careers.
UH gutted out a narrow 8-6 win at the third flight, with juniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson falling just short.
In singles action, the Cougars erased their early 1-0 match deficit with wins at the bottom two flights. Jo Garvey topped senior co-captain Jessica Easdale at the sixth flight, while Liselot Koenen downed Grubb at flight number five.
Hill came up with a victory for the Falcons, topping Charlotte Phillips in the minimum two sets. But, Giorgia Pozzan closed out a win over Eccleston at the top flight, while Celia Fraser defeated Reuland at the third level to give the Cougars the required four points for the match victory.
In the lone match to go three sets, Chiricosta dropped her opening set to Bryony Hunter, 6-4, but won the second set by a 6-3 count. Hunter, however, captured the second-flight match by a 6-3 result.
The Falcons return to the court on Monday (March 19), concluding the Vegas swing with a match against the University of Kansas.
