DeSalvo, Arney Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
March 12, 2012 | General, Ice Hockey, Softball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Dan DeSalvo and softball player Andrea Arney.
Male Athlete of the Week
Dan DeSalvo, a freshman from Rolling Meadows, Ill., scored five goals and added two assists as BGSU stunned No. 2 Ferris State in the second round of the CCHA playoffs. DeSalvo scored a hat trick in the third game of the series, including the overtime game-winner to send the Falcons to the CCHA semifinals for the first time since 2001. DeSalvo's three-goal effort marks the first Falcon to record a hat trick since Derek Whitmore, in a 4-1 win over Western Michigan on Jan. 18, 2008. DeSalvo's 10 playoff goals also set a new CCHA Tournament record.
Female Athlete of the Week
Andrea Arney, a junior from Navarre, Ohio, hit .353 with three homers and a slugging percentage of .882 as the Falcons went 3-2 at the adidas Invitational. Arney had two home runs and six RBI against host Winthrop, setting career best in both categories. Later in the day, she knocked in two runs in BGSU's 4-0 win over Campbell. Arney hit her third homer of the weekend and fourth of the season against St. John's Saturday.
