The Falcons, as the number-one seed for the tourney, earned a triple bye into the semifinals. BGSU has not played in over a week, since a 91-48 win at Kent State on Feb. 28 to end the regular season. The Falcons enter Friday's CMU game with an overall record of 24-5, and BGSU posted a 14-2 MAC record to win the conference's regular-season title.
The Chippewas, seeded fifth, already have posted a pair of wins in the league tourney. Central earned a first-round bye, then defeated eighth-seeded Ohio by a 58-55 score in the second round on Wednesday afternoon (March 7). CMU trailed by eight points late in the first half of Thursday's (March 8) quarterfinal-round game, before rallying for a 78-64 win over fourth-seeded Miami.
The wins over Ohio and Miami give Central Michigan an overall record of 19-14 this season to date. CMU went 8-8 in MAC action.
In the lone regular-season meeting between BGSU and CMU this season, the Falcons posted a 77-72 overtime win in Mount Pleasant on Jan. 28. The Falcons were without head coach Curt Miller for that game, as associate head coach Jennifer Roos served as interim head coach for the CMU contest.
Central Michigan was without three players -- Jas'Mine Bracey, Crystal Bradford and Jessica Green -- for that game. Those three, all of whom were named to the MAC's All-Freshman Team earlier this week, combined to score 57 of the Chippewas' 78 points in Thursday's win over Miami.
BGSU leads the all-time series with CMU by a 45-13 count, and the Falcons have won the last three meetings. BG has a record of 4-2 in neutral-site matches vs. Central, and the Falcons are 6-2 in MAC Tournament meetings and 2-0 in games at Gund/Quicken Loans Arena against the Chippewas.
The teams are meeting in the MAC Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive season. Last March 11, the Falcons posted an 80-72 victory at the Q. The teams' other meeting in downtown Cleveland came in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 tourney, with the Brown and Orange picking up an 82-65 win. Miller has a record of 13-3 vs. CMU in his BGSU tenure.
The winner of the BGSU-CMU game will play the winner of Friday's second semifinal match, which features second-seeded Eastern Michigan against third-seeded Toledo. The MAC Tournament championship game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon (March 10) at 1:00 p.m.
