Falcons Announce Captains for 2012
April 13, 2012 | Football
Bowling Green State University head football coach Dave Clawson has announced that Dominic Flewellyn, Chris Jones, Ronnie Goble, Matt Schilz, Paul Swan and Bart Tanski will serve as captains for the 2012 football season. The captains were voted on by the members of the football team.
Flewellyn, a native of Maple Heights, Ohio, will be a junior when 2012 begins. The offensive guard started all 12 games in 2011 and has started 20 consecutive games in his career, second-most among BGSU offensive lineman. Flewellyn was named Academic All-MAC Honorable mention last season.
Jones will be a captain for the second straight season for the Orange and Brown. In 2011 BGSU elected game captains until midway through the year, when Jones and Ben Bojicic served as captains for the final six games of the season. Last year Jones earned first-team All-MAC honors after recording 47 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. He was twice named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week after recording two sacks, a forced fumble and a safety versus Idaho and six tackles and three sacks versus Temple, both BGSU wins. In his career, Jones has started 25 games (played in 37), recorded 115 tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks.
Schilz, a native of Arcadia, Calif., completed 245-of-412 passes for 3,024 yards (sixth-most in BGSU history) and 28 touchdowns (second-most at BGSU) in 2011. After throwing for 258 yards and five touchdowns versus Morgan State and 437 yards and four scores versus Wyoming, Schilz was named to the Manning Watch List, an award given to the nation's top quarterback. The junior-to-be has started 22 games in his career, completing 474-of-789 passes (60.1 percent) for 5,247 yards and 36 touchdowns.
Swan, a junior-to-be, made 11 starts at linebacker last season for the Orange and Brown. Swan finished the year with 63 tackles, one sack and one pass break-up in 2011. The Nashotah, Wisc., native posted a career-high 10 tackles versus Wyoming and Temple and posted his first career sack versus the Owls. Swan has 91 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and one sack in his career.
No other captain for BGSU will have more experience than Tanski when 2012 begins. In fact, he will be just one of three fifth-year seniors on the 2012 roster. Tanski has seen spot duty on several special teams units over the past two seasons, most notably, serving as the team's holder on field goals and extra points in 2010.
Goble comes to BGSU from Plymouth, Mich., and is expected to start at defensive end in 2012. Speaking of starting, the junior-to-be started nine games last season (played in all 12), recording 20 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, one sack and a recovered a fumble. Goble recorded his first career sack in a 37-23 win at Miami last year and earned Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention in 2011.
