Jamel Martin scampered for a 19-yard touchdown with just 3:51 to play as the Orange team came from behind for a 14-13 victory over the White team in the annual Bowling Green State University football spring game on Friday night (April 13).
The run came just minutes after Alex Carter had given White a 13-7 lead with a breakaway 66-yard run. That play was the White squad's only touchdown of the game and accounted for over a quarter of their 215 yards from scrimmage.
White took an early 3-0 lead on a 29-yard field goal by Tyler Tate as the first quarter drew to a close. He added a 25-yard boot late in the third quarter.
Those kicks sandwiched a two-yard touchdown pass by Matt Schilz in the second quarter. The rainbow settled into the hands of wide out Herve Coby in the back-left corner of the end zone and gave Orange a 7-6 halftime lead.
For the game, Schilz was 19/36 for 185 yards, plus one touchdown and no interceptions, as quarterback for the Orange team. Matt Johnson led the White squad and went 16/30 for 131 yards and an interception.
Martin's 19 yard touchdown run helped him gain 86 yards on 20 carries. John Pettigrew had 15 carries of his own for 39 yards.
Five receivers had four or more receptions, led by Ryan Burbrunk (7 catches, 46 yards) and Heath Jackson (5 catches, 44 yards).
Defensively, Darrell Hunter joined Truss with interceptions, while five players earned sacks, including Ted Ouellet, who had three.
The countdown is now on for BGSU's regular season opener against the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. on September 1st. That game is now just 140 days away.
