FIRST DAY RESULTS (.pdf)
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team dodged rain drops for much of Saturday (April 14) at the Kepler Intercollegiate, but the Falcons found themselves in the middle of the pack while Parker Hewit took aim at another top-ten finish after the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
BGSU was tied for fourth after a first round 305 and led nationally-ranked Kent State by as many as seven strokes during the first 18 holes. The team slipped back to a 309 in the second round, as play became increasingly difficult, but the team's 36-hole total of 614 is well within reach of a better finish.
The Falcons will enter the final round in eighth place out of 15 teams, one shot ahead of Eastern Michigan (615) and ten shots ahead of tenth-place Western Kentucky (624). Overall, BGSU is third among the six Mid-American Conference schools in the event, as they also lead Ohio (625) and Ball State (627).
The Orange and Brown trail seventh-place Toledo by just one stroke and are only three behind fifth-place Xavier. Kent State is in fourth place after re-establishing themselves with a second-round 295 and a one-day total of 603. Indiana and Ohio State are tied for the tournament lead at 599.
Individually, Parker Hewit seeks his fourth top-ten finish of the season and potentially his second straight top-five result. He was tied for the lead after an even-par first round (71) and remains in a tie for eighth place by carding 150 (71-79) for the first day.
Hewit trails a group of four players tied for fourth place by one stroke and is only three shots behind tournament leader Max Buckley of Southern Methodist. The top of the field is very tightly packed, with 25 players entering the final round within five shots of the lead.
Wes Gates and Chris Melvin are each six shots back and tied for 26th place after shooting 153 on the first day. Gates had rounds of 78 and 75, while Melvin carded a 76 and 77.
Charlie Olson shot a 159 (81-78) on Saturday, while Drew Preston struggled to a 36-hole total of 168 (80-88).
The final round begins on Sunday (April 15) with staggered tee times from the first and 10th holes. BGSU golfers will take the final five tee times from the 10th hole. Preston starts at 9:42 a.m., and he is followed by Olson (9:51), Melvin (10:00), Gates (10:09) and Hewit (10:18).
