Falcon junior went 2-0 in BGSU's two weekend matches
Bowling Green State University tennis junior Katie Grubb has been named to the Mid-American Conference's All-Tournament Team. The announcement was made Sunday afternoon (April 29) in conjunction with the 2012 MAC Championships.
Grubb, a native of Elkhart, Ind. (Elkhart Memorial), played a key role in the Falcons' 4-0 win over Eastern Michigan in Friday's (April 27) quarterfinal round. In doubles play, she teamed with fellow junior Maddy Eccleston for an 8-4 win over the Eagles' duo of Mariya Toncheva and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr at the second flight. That result came exactly one week after the Eccleston/Grubb duo had lost an 8-4 decision to those same opponents in the teams' regular-season meeting.
In singles play, Grubb won a tiebreaker to capture a narrow first set against Toncheva, then rode that momentum to a 6-0 win in the second set at the fifth flight. As was the case in doubles, Grubb's decision marked a reversal from the previous Friday. Toncheva had captured a three-set match in the regular-season dual.
On Saturday, Grubb and Eccleston battled Miami's Riekie Honiball and Nimisha Mohan to a 7-7 draw before the match was abandoned after the RedHawks won the other two doubles matches.
"This honor is well deserved," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "Katie battled hard all weekend, especially against Eastern Michigan where she helped reverse last weekend's results and help BG get the victory. She remains undefeated in MAC Tournament play.
"I am so happy for Katie, because she worked hard all year and was very coachable. I know this will give her momentum as she heads into a great senior year."
On the weekend, Grubb improved her overall MAC Championships record to 3-0. In addition to her singles and doubles wins against EMU on Friday, she picked up a singles victory over Akron's Carolina Castro Cota at the sixth flight in her freshman year.
This season, Grubb finished with an overall record of 34-23, including a 15-12 singles mark and a 19-11 doubles record. That doubles ledger included a 7-3 record when competing with Eccleston.
For her career, Grubb is now 85-61, and is only two wins away from moving into the top-30 on the BGSU career list. Grubb is now 38-29 in singles and 47-32 in doubles as a Falcon.
In addition to Grubb, the MAC's All-Tournament Team included the Akron duo of Zara Harutyunyan and Prang Pantusart, Honiball and Miami teammate Alix Thurman and Western Michigan's Kathleen Hawkins. Pantusart was named the tourney MVP as the Zips posted a 4-3 win over Miami in the championship match for the second-straight season.
Dean's Falcons finished the 2011-12 season with an overall record of 10-10. BGSU went 4-4 in MAC regular-season play, earning the fifth seed in the nine-team league. Dean and assistant coach Cindy Yonker had just one senior on the seven-woman roster in '11-12.
