Schilz has several targets to throw to in 2012, led by red-shirt freshman Chris Gallon (12 catches, 158 yards), Shaun Joplin (11 catches, 147 yards) and Ryan Burbrink (11 catches, 60 yards).
When Schilz needs a break from throwing he has five different running backs he can hand it off too. Anthon Samuel, the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, had 67 yards and two touchdowns last weekend versus Idaho, but expect John Pettigrew and Jamel Martin to also see time.
Scouting the Defense
The Falcons return 10 starters from the 2011 team and are led by senior defensive tackle Chris Jones. Jones has seven tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks on the year. Last week versus the Vandals he had five tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
As a team the Falcons rank third in the Mid-American Conference at 20.0 points per game allowed and are fourth in total defense (361.5). The biggest overall improvement through two games has been the rush defense. In 2011 the Falcons allowed 203.5 yards per game on the ground, but have nearly cut that in half, down to 113.0 in 2012.
Scouting the Special Teams

Tyler Tate saw his first action of his career last week versus Idaho, converting on all three of his extra points. The freshman has yet to attempt a field goal in his Falcon career.
Idaho Recap

The Falcon defense was outstanding for the entire contest, holding the Vandals to just two field goals in the first half and a single touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Idaho managed just six yards on the ground for the night.
The Series
Bowling Green leads the all-time series 39-33-4 and is 16-21-3 all-time at Toledo. In the last 10 contests inside the Glass Bowl, the Orange and Brown are just 3-7-0.

The contest will also be the MAC opener for both squads for the first-time since Oct. 2, 1993.

Battle For I-75
The University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University jointly announced the introduction of a new Battle of I-75 Trophy in 2011. It will be presented annually to the winner of the football game between the two schools.
The trophy, sponsored by Taylor Kia Automotive Group, will replace the Peace Pipe Trophy that had been used in the football rivalry since 1980. The new Battle of I-75 Trophy was designed by Jeff Artz, who also designed the Biletnikoff Award Trophy, which is given annually to the top collegiate wide receiver in the country.
The Peace Pipe Trophy will be permanently housed in the UT football trophy case as the Rockets won 33-14 in 2010, the final contest that featured the peace pipe.
The schools agreed to change the trophy after conversations with members of the Native American community. Taken into consideration was the spiritual symbolism of the peace pipe to the Native American community, as well as the NCAA's initiative to remove inappropriate Native American nicknames and symbols associated with member's athletic teams.
“Special” Note
Something to keep an eye on for Saturday's contest will be the BGSU special teams units. In three contests versus the Rockets under head coach Dave Clawson the Falcons have:
• One kick return for a score (Booboo Gates, 88-yard touchdown in 2011).
• Succeeded on one fake punt (2011)
• One punt return for touchdown (Eugene Cooper in 2010)

Catching On
The Falcons entered the season with just one receiver that had ever played a down for the Orange and Brown (Shaun Joplin), but despite the inexperience, the receivers have been nothing but impressive two weeks into the year.
• Red-shirt freshman Chris Gallon leads the team with 12 catches and 158 yards.
• Ryan Burbrink, a freshman walk-on, is second on the team with 11 catches.
• Je`Ron Stokes, a transfer from Michigan , caught a touchdown pass last weekend in the win versus Idaho in his second game as a Falcon.

Stan led Toledo to a 203-155 overall and 122-89 MAC record in 12 seasons with the Rockets. BGSU's Joplin is second on the team with 11 receptions for 147 yards.
