Wes Gates extended his streak of consecutive rounds under 70 to four and positioned himself for his first career tournament victory as the Bowling Green State University men's golf team hosted the first day of the 12th annual John Piper Intercollegiate on Monday (Sept. 17). The tournament is being held at Bowling Green's Stone Ridge Golf Club.
Gates began the day by shooting a 66 in the opening round. The score came one stroke shy of matching the career-best 65 that he carded at last week's Marshall Invitational. He concluded the day with a 69 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 135.
At nine-under-par, Gates leads Cody Nickson of Wright State by five strokes and Oakland's Mark Scott Jr. by seven. Those are the only three players currently under par.
Gates' streak of four straight sub-70 rounds goes back to the tournament at Marshall, where he finished with rounds of 69 and 65. Those four rounds combine for a score of 269; for perspective, the BGSU record for a 72-hole tournament is 282.
As a team, the Falcons finished Monday's play in seventh place after shooting 596 (296-300). They trail tournament leader Cleveland State by nine strokes in a tightly-packed field. BGSU is one stroke behind Wisconsin-Green Bay and three behind Oakland and Evansville. The Falcons lead Valparaiso by two shots.
Individually, Charlie Olson and Zac Brammer are tied for 26th place at 152. Olson carded rounds of 75 and 77, while Brammer followed an opening 74 with a round of 78. Both are five strokes outside of the top ten.
Holden Pahr shot back-to-back 77s to finish with 154. He is part of a tie for 41st place. Griffin Smith joined Pahr and Brammer in competing at their first John Piper Intercollegiate. Smith posted a first-day total of 156 after rounds of 77 and 79.
Chris Melvin, Torey Brummett and Joe Cooper also competed for BGSU. Melvin carded a 158 (81-77), while Brummett finished at 159 (78-81). Cooper completed the day with a 36-hole score of 165 (85-80).
The third and final round of the 54-hole tournament begins on Tuesday (Sept. 18) with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Gates will be seeking BGSU's first individual medalist since Charlie Olson's victory in October 2010.
