Wes Gates, a member of the Bowling Green State University men's golf team, won the John Piper Intercollegiate by 12 shots with a 54-hole score of 206, his first collegiate tournament victory. Gates was the lone golfer among the 63-player field to finish the tournament under par.
Gates carded a final round 71 on Tuesday afternoon, in the wind and rain at Stoneridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio, after opening with a 66-69 on Monday. He was one of just two golfers to break par on the final 18 holes, and his 206 was two shots shy of the 54-hole BGSU record, held by Charlie Olson, a current member of the BGSU golf team.
Overall, the team climbed two spots in the final round to finish fifth with a score of 902 (296-300-306). Cleveland State finished first among the 10-team field with a score of 886. Oakland was second (891), followed by Green Bay (894) and Wright State (894).
Freshman Holden Pahr had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a 74, Combined with his pair of 77's on Monday, Pahr finished in a tie for 21st with a score of 228.
Also competing in the tournament were Olson (75-77-82--234), Chris Melvin (81-77-79--237) and Torey Brummett (78-81-83--242), finishing 44th, 55th and 58th.
Zac Brammer (74-78-77--229), Griffin Smith (77-79-77--233) and Joe Cooper (85-80-79) competed as individuals. Their scores were not eligible for team play.
Up next for the Orange and Brown is the Cardinal Classin (Sept. 24), hosted by the University of Louisville.
