Falcon Quick Hits
• The Bowling Green State University football team is in the middle of its 94th season of football and has an all-time record of 497-347-51 (.584).
• Head coach Dave Clawson is in his fourth season at the helm of the football team and has an all-time record of 72-73 and is 14-24 at BGSU.
• The Falcons are 146-79-5 (.646) all-time inside Doyt L. Perry Stadium and 6-12 at home under Clawson.
• The Falcons are 3-0 under Clawson in home openers, with wins over Troy (2009), Marshall (2010) and Morgan State (2011).
• For the fourth consecutive year the Falcons will have all three coordinators returning. Warren Ruggiero, Mike Elko and Adam Scheier will coach offense, defense and special teams.
• BGSU is coming off a 27-14 loss at Florida to open the 2012 season.
• This week's matchup with Idaho will be the third time in four years the two teams have met, with Idaho capturing the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl (43-42) and BGSU downing the Vandals last season in Moscow (32-15).
• Chris Jones and Jordon Roussos started in the 2009 contest with Idaho.
• Anthon Samuel (Doak Walker), Chris Jones (Rotary Lombardi), Dwayne Woods (Rotary Lombardi and Butkus), Brian Schmiedebusch (Ray Guy) and Alex Bayer (John Mackey) were all named to preseason watch lists.
• According to philsteele.com the Falcons have the 10th youngest roster in the country with 66.7 percent of the roster underclassmen.
Scouting the Falcons
The Falcons finished 2011 with a 5-7 record, a three win improvement from 2010 (2-10). This season's squad returns 20 starters (7 offense, 10 defense, 3 special teams).
Scouting the Offense
Quarterback Matt Schilz will be making his 24th start of his career this weekend versus the Vandals. Schilz, a junior, threw for over 3,000 yards last season and 28 touchdowns, all career-bests.
Gone are Freddie Barnes (155 catches in 2009) and Kamar Jordan (174 catches in 2010-11 combined), but the Falcons have arguably the deepest receiving core under Clawson. Just last weekend versus Florida six different players caught passes.
When Schilz needs a break from throwing he has five different running backs he can hand it off too. Anthon Samuel, the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, is expected to get a majority of carries, but the Falcons list five running backs on the two-deep for a reason.
Scouting the Defense
Over the past few years linebacker Dwayne Woods would end most contests with double-digit tackles, but if what the Falcons did versus Florida is any indication, this year's team could be much more of a “team” defense. Brian Baird led the squad with five tackles and a total of 10 Falcons had at least three stops as BGSU held No. 23 Florida to just 365 yards of total offense.
Scouting the Special Teams
Last weekend the special teams units had some great moments, but also some head scratchers. Punter Brian Schmiedebusch had three punts of over 50 yards, but also had one that traveled just 10 yards. The Falcons were also 0-2 on field goals (missing from 31 and 29 yards).
Florida Recap
Bowling Green traveled down to “The Swamp” on Sept. 1, and nearly pulled off one of the biggest wins in school history. The Falcons got on the board first with a 1-yard touchdown from John Pettigrew and then answered back to start the second half with a long touchdown drive to knot the score at 14-14 midway through the third quarter.
BGSU began the fourth quarter on the Florida 23-yardline (trailing 17-14), but saw the game slip through their hand. Quarterback Matt Schilz had a pass bounce off a wide receiver's hands and into a UF defender. Three plays later Florida scored on a long touchdown to take a 24-14 lead. Overall, the Falcons had more first downs (22-14) and committed only three penalties (25 yards) compared to Florida's 14 (106 yards).
Welcome To The Doyt
Since opening in 1966, Doyt L. Perry Stadium has been a major home field advantage for the Orange and Brown. The Falcons are 146-79-5 (.646) all-time inside “The Doyt”.
The stadium is named after Doyt Perry, the man who led Bowling Green to a 77-11-5 record in his 10 years as the head coach of the Falcons. He compiled an .855 win percentage in the 1950s and 1960s and led the Falcons to the 1959 National College Division Championship.
Home Openers
Under Clawson the Falcons are 3-0 in home openers inside “The Doyt” with wins over Troy (2009), Marshall (2010) and Morgan State (2011). In those three contests the Falcons have averaged 44.3 points per game, while allowing just 18.3.
Youth Still Served
Even with 20 starters returning, the Falcons still have the 10th youngest team in the country according to PhilSteele.com. According to that website the Falcons have 66.7 percent of its roster as under-classmen. The entire roster breakdown is below.
Seniors - 10 (9.5%)
Juniors - 25 (23.8%)
Sophomores - 26 (24.8%)
Freshmen - 44 (41.9%)
New Starters
With still a young team it is to be expected, but the Falcons had eight players start for the first time in their careers last weekend at Florida: Fahn Cooper, David Kekuewa, Alex Huettel, Ryan Burbrink, Shaun Joplin, Chris Gallon, Zach Colvin, and Gabe Martin.
Several Firsts
While those eight above made their first career start, many other firsts occurred in the contest versus Florida.
• Ryan Burbrink, Chris Gallon and Je`Ron Stokes all recorded their first career catch as a Falcon.
• Brian Baird and Victor Osborn recorded their first career tackles.
Take me To Your Leader
The Falcons will have six captains in 2012: Dominic Flewellyn (OL), Ronnie Goble (DE), Chris Jones (DT), Matt Schilz (QB), Paul Swan (LB) and Bart Tanski (WR).
The Series
With the BG/Idaho series tied at 1-1, this weekend's meeting between the two squads will be a rubber match. Idaho won the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl (43-42) in Boise, Idaho. The Falcons returned the favor, opening the 2011 season with a 32-15 win in Moscow, Idaho. This weekend's matchup with the Vandals will be the first for BGSU at home.
Remember 2009?
Only two starters remain from that 2009 bowl game versus Idaho. Chris Jones and Jordon Roussos both started at defensive tackle. Roussos has since moved to the other side of the ball and is expected to make his 20th consecutive start at right tackle.
Catching On
The Falcons entered last week's contest against Florida with just one receiver (Shaun Joplin) to ever touch the field in a Falcon uniform. In the contest with the Gators, several names stood out. Walk-on Ryan Burbrink led the team with eight catches (45 yards), helping to advance the chains many times. Chris Gallon added six receptions for 69 yards, including an 18-yard catch to set up John Pettigrew's 1-yard touchdown run. Je`Ron Stokes added four catches for 32 yards versus the Gators.
Very Special Teams
Since head coach Dave Clawson arrived at Bowling Green, he and assistant coach Adam Scheier, have found a way to get the most out of the BGSU special teams. In three years and one game Scheier's special teams have:
• Three kick returns for touchdowns.
• Two punt returns for scores.
• Have blocked 11 kicks.
• Produced two All-MAC returners (Booboo Gates and Binky Cooper).
• Produced two All-MAC Punters (Brian Wright and Brian Schmiedebusch)
• Successfully converted on two fake punts.
