Stellar Crowd Highlights Home Opener
September 11, 2012 | Football
BGSU fans packed the Doyt on Saturday to open the home football schedule in style, as the Falcons took down the University of Idaho, 21-13, in front of over 16,000 in attendance.
Fans enjoyed several new enhancements to the stadium, including the brand new video board and the giant BG helmet players ran through to enter the field. "Thunder sticks" handed out to fans created a loud and exciting atmosphere throughout the game and a fireworks display closed out the night, as the Falcons claimed their first win of the season.
Students showed up in force, as free gameday shuttles provided transportation to and from the stadium. The student section was packed early and remained full until the last seconds of the game.
Tailgating got underway early outside of Doyt Perry Stadium and was followed by the "Falcon Walk" tradition, with fans lining up to cheer on the players as they march to the stadium. The Stroh Center also stayed busy, with the one-year anniversary celebration of its opening and the "Stroh Show" performance put on by the BGSU marching band prior to the game.
On the field, the Falcons didn't disappoint those in attendance, as Anthon Samuel twice found the end zone and junior Je'Ron Stokes caught a pass from quarterback Matt Schilz for his first career touchdown. A memorable play came on an interception that was tipped three times by Falcon players, before Josh Pettus secured the ball. The chaotic pick was named one of the top college football plays of the week by ESPN.
The Falcons open MAC competition this Saturday, traveling right up the road to face Toledo.  The next chance to cheer on the Falcons at home will be the homecoming game against Rhode Island on Sept. 29.
