Falcons' doubles teams go 7-1 on final-day action at IU's Winter Invite; Eccleston & Reuland down the No. 26 duo in the nation

The Bowling Green State University tennis team enjoyed a second-straight day of doubles success on Sunday (Jan. 13). Head coach Penny Dean's team posted a 7-1 record on the final day of action at the adidas/IU Winter Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. The three-day, four-team event, hosted by Indiana University, was held at the IU Tennis Center.

After winning just one total match on Friday, the Brown and Orange went 3-4 in singles on Saturday, and BGSU competitors combined to go 12-3 in doubles over the final two days.

Six of the Falcons' eight team members posted perfect 2-0 doubles records on Sunday, with that group including seniors Maddy Eccleston, Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson, juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland and freshman Drew Fillis.

The other two team members, senior Mary Hill and freshman Katie Brozovich, lost an 8-5 decision to an IU team, but both players posted a victory in their other match of the day.

BGSU's Sunday success included a perfect 4-0 record against 52nd-ranked Missouri. The Falcons also were undefeated against the fourth school in the tournament, Marquette, on Sunday. BG had a 3-0 doubles mark vs. the Golden Eagles on final-day action.

"I am happy that we were able to try a lot of different doubles combinations in this format," said Dean. "It is exciting that everyone did so well, particularly over the last two days, and that we swept a very strong Missouri team in doubles today."

Every member of the Falcons began the day with an 8-6 win. Three of those victories came vs. Mizzou, with Dean using teams of Eccleston/Reuland, Chiricosta/Johnson and Grubb/Hill to get those wins over the Tigers. BG's two frosh, Brozovich and Fillis, picked up a win vs. Marquette.

The win by Eccleston and Reuland was particularly impressive as it came against a Missouri team -- Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Elisha Gabb -- that was ranked 26th in the nation in the first ITA doubles ratings of the spring.

Hill and Brozovich fell to IU's Jayawickrema/Rubenstein tandem, but juniors Chiricosta and Reuland combined for an 8-2 win over a Missouri duo. Grubb and Eccleston picked up an 8-3 win over Marquette, while Fillis and Johnson also played a Marquette team and posted an 8-6 victory.

Grubb finished the tournament with a 6-1 record, including a 2-0 singles record and a 4-1 doubles mark. Chiricosta was 5-2 on the weekend, going a perfect 5-0 over the last two days of the invite, while Johnson's 4-3 mark included a 4-0 doubles record after a first-day loss.

Each of BGSU's eight players won at least two total matches on the weekend, with six picking up three or more victories.

The Falcons begin the dual-match portion of the schedule with a pair of contests next weekend. BGSU will return to the state of Indiana for a Friday (Jan. 18) match vs. No. 19 Notre Dame. That dual begins at 4:00 p.m. Then, the Brown and Orange will host Duquesne on Saturday (Jan. 19), with doubles action set to start at 2:30 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
