BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University swim team hosts its second tri-meet of the season Saturday, welcoming Michigan State and Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo to Cooper Pool at 1 p.m.
The Falcons are 0-3 in the MAC after falling to Eastern Michigan last weekend in the first meet of the new year. Michigan State will be the third Big Ten school the Falcons have faced this season, after winning six races at the TYR Invitational against Northwestern and Illinois in November.
"I think there will be a lot of close races on Saturday," said head coach Petra Martin. "The meet will be about who is sharper at this point in the season, especially after the last few weeks of tough training camps. We always welcome challenging competition as it helps us get ready for the MAC Championships."
The tri-meet is the final home meet for the Falcons of the year and the last appearance at Cooper Pool for seniors Jen Beatty, Emily Bennet, Alexis Kain and Alexa Harris.
Beatty, in her fifth year in the program, holds more top-ten times in BGSU history than any other currently rostered swimmer. An outstanding student, Beatty has held a 4.0 grade point average throughout her time as a Falcon. In 2012, she became only the third swimmer in BGSU history to be named a Capital One Academic All-American.
Co-captains Kain and Harris each hold BGSU records, with Kain swimming school-record times in the 100- and 200 breaststroke and Harris in the 200 backstroke. Harris also has top-three times in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM. Last year, both Harris and Kain represented BGSU at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Bennet is one the most accomplished sprinters in school history. Throughout her career, she has recorded top-five times in the 50-, 100- and 200 freestyle as well as the 100 backstroke. She was also part of school-record relays in the 200- and 800 free relays. In her final year at BGSU, Bennet is in position to have her finest season yet.
"We are looking forward to recognizing our senior class and seeing and hearing everyone in our home stands one more time this season," Martin said.
The Falcons, Bulls and Spartans square off at 1 p.m. inside BGSU's Cooper Pool, located in the Student Recreation Center. Admission is free.
