With the win, the Falcons improve to 1-1 in dual-match play. Saturday's action was the Dukes' first dual match of the season.
BGSU won the doubles points, paced by an 8-0 win by seniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson at the third flight. The Hill/Johnson duo defeated DU's Paula Gruber and Alexa Miller.
In second-flight action, head coach Penny Dean's team got a win from another pair of seniors, as Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb topped Chandler Consonery and Judy Li by an 8-5 score to clinch the doubles points. The Dukes picked up a win at the top flight, as DU's Megan O'Sullivan and Sarah Shashura got past BG juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland, 8-4.
In singles play, however, the Falcons won at each of the top-six flights, capturing five of those matches in straight sets. At the top-five flights, only one of the 10 total sets was as close as 6-4.
Hill lost only two total games in her fourth-flight win over Consonery, while Chiricosta dropped only three games -- all in the second set -- in a win over O'Sullivan at the second flight.
Grubb defeated Alrissa Tobe at the fifth flight, with both sets ending in 6-2 scores, and Reuland lost just five total games in a victory over Li at the top flight. Eccleston came out on the winning side of a pair of 6-3 sets in third-flight play against Shashura.
Falcon freshman Katie Brozovich saw her match go to a third-set tiereaker for the second consecutive day. After suffering a narrow loss on Friday at No. 19 Notre Dame, Brozovich defeated DU's Miller on Saturday. The BG freshman won her opening set, 6-2, but Miller rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker. The third-set tiebreaker saw Brozovich pull out a 10-7 victory to give BGSU a sweep of the six singles matches.
The Falcons and Dukes played two additional singles matches and one doubles contest that did not count in the final match scoring. Brozovich and fellow freshman Drew Fillis picked up a doubles victory, while Johnson was a winner over Gruber in her singles match, with Fillis falling in a third-set tiebreaker.
BGSU is back in action next weekend, heading to Chicago for a pair of matches. The Falcons will face Drake in neutral-site action on Saturday (Jan. 26), before meeting Chicago State the following morning (Jan. 27).
