Bayer Named To Mackey Award Midseason Watch List
October 15, 2013 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio – BGSU redshirt senior Alex Bayer is one of 29 tight ends named to the John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List. Bayer has established himself as one of the top tight ends in the Mid-American Conference and also had earned recognition on the preseason watch list.
Bayer ranks third on the team with 18 receptions through the first seven games of the season, compiling 204 receiving yards. He ranks second in the MAC among tight ends in both categories and is one of four players from the MAC on the list, joining Massachusetts' Rob Blanchflower, Ball State's Zane Fakes and Eastern Michigan's Tyreese Russell.
In a key road win at Kent State, Bayer had four catches for 52 yards and then followed that up with four more receptions at Indiana. In a home victory over Murray State, he added four catches for a season-high 65 yards.
Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the John Mackey Award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2013 John Mackey Award recipient will be presented live on Dec. 12 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show at 6 p.m. on ESNPU. Mackey Award semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 18 and finalists one week later.
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
