October 05, 2013 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University volleyball team suffered their first loss in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday night, as they fell in three sets at No. 20 Ohio. With the loss, the Falcons are now 6-9 overall and 3-1 in the MAC. The Bobcats improve to 14-2 and 4-0 in the MAC with the win.
Ohio dominated play in the first set, as they out-attacked the Falcons .324 to .108. Ohio's attack kept the Falcons guessing all night, as seven different Bobcats recorded multiple kills. OU would score the first four points of the match, but the Falcons would battle back to tie the set early on at eight apiece. With the two teams separated by just a point late in the set, the Bobcats would go on a run. Following a Danielle Tonyan kill which made it 16-15, the Bobcats would extend the lead to four, scoring four of the next five points. Trailing 20-16, head coach Danijela Tomic would use a timeout to slow the momentum of the home team. Out of the timeout, Ohio would score two more, once again causing the Falcons to burn their second timeout. Jelena Sunjic would record a kill to get the Falcons within 22-17, but OU would close the set with the final three points.
The Orange and Brown would play better early in the second set, as Ohio would use their first timeout of the second set with the Falcons leading 12-9. The Bobcats would come out of the timeout strong, scoring six of the next nine points to force the Falcons into a timeout with the match tied at 15. Out of the break, the Falcons would score three straight to force the Bobcats into their final timeout. OU once again responded to the timeout, as they would score 10 of the final 15 points to claim a 25-23 win in the second set.
Ohio came out strong in the third set, scoring early and often en route to the 25-15 win. The Falcons would use their first timeout of the set, trailing 9-5 following an attack error. The Falcons would battle to within three on three different occasions, but would be forced into their final timeout on the heels of an OU scoring run, trailing 16-10. The Falcons would get no closer than six points the rest of the match, as nine attack errors in the set debilitated the Orange and Brown.
Paige Penrod was the only Falcon in double figures for kills, as her 11 led the way. Ashley Dunn was a bright spot for the Falcons, as she had 23 digs in the match.
The Falcons will return to Bowling Green for two matches next weekend, when they host Buffalo and Akron at Stroh Center.
