Evanston, Ill. – Bowling Green freshman swimmer Victoria Griffin set a school record in the 100 freestyle and the BGSU swimming team closed out the TYR Invitational in impressive fashion Saturday.
The Falcons ended fourth out of nine teams at the meet, hosted by Northwestern. The host school won with 1,066 points and was followed by Michigan State with 657. Missouri State edged the Falcons by just one point, with 583. Bowling Green's 582 points were well in front of Illinois-Chicago, Truman State, North Dakota, Kenyon and Northern Iowa.
Griffin finished with the second-best time in the 100 freestyle in the prelims, swimming a 50.75. However, in the finals, she became the first Bowling Green swimmer to ever finish the event in less than 50 seconds, posting a time of 49.87 to win the event. Teammate Brittany Szekely held the old school record in the event with a time of 50.31 at last year's USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships.
On top of that, Griffin reached the NCAA "B" cut time, set at 49.99 seconds in the event. She is the first Falcon to attain a "B" cut time this year.
But Griffin was not the only Falcon to shine in the 100 freestyle. Four of the eight championship final swimmers were from Bowling Green with Joëlle Scheps placing fifth, followed by Kayla Effinger. Szekely placed eighth.
Bowling Green's relays were strong all weekend and the 400 freestyle relay held up that standard on the final day of the meet. Griffin, Effinger, Scheps and Szekely were second at the meet with a time of 3:25.33, beating their season best by more than four seconds and ending less than two seconds shy of another school record.
Daniela Carrillo posted a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke. She had the top prelim time of 2:18.06 and then followed that up with a 2:16.22 to place second in the championship final. That time just missed the NCAA "B" cut of 2:15.99.
In the 50 butterfly, Scheps had the top time in the prelims at 25.19 seconds and then placed third in the championship final in 25.42. Maya Skorupski placed fourth in the 50 backstroke in 26.98 seconds and Jordan Bullock was sixth in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.43.
Scheps ended the meet contributing a team-high 65 points, fourth-most at the meet. Carrillo was next with 50 points.
"We swam with a lot of heart today," BGSU head coach Petra Martin said. "We had a lot of personal and season-best times and are leaving with a new school record and an NCAA B cut. I'm proud of the team and how we pushed through on the last day. I believe that we learned a lot this weekend and are better prepared for the MAC Championships. We have to go back to work and get ready for the second part of the season."
Bowling Green will compete next in the US Short Course Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn. Dec. 5-7.
