Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green men's basketball team used a total team effort on both ends of the floor on Saturday afternoon to post its 22nd straight season opening victory in a 102-49 rout of Earlham College at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio.
With the lopsided win, Bowling Green improves to 1-0 for the 22nd straight season and 8-0 versus non-Division I opponents under head coach Louis Orr.
The Falcons had six players score in double figures for the first time since Nov. 2009, which included all five starters, while on the defensive end BGSU totaled a school record 22 steals for the contest.
BGSU also reached the 100-point mark for the first time since defeating Urbana 103-78 back on Nov. 21, 2003, while the 53-point win was the largest margin of victory for a Falcons' team since BGSU defeated Urbana 114-52 back on Dec. 22, 1999.
Making his first intercollegiate start, junior guard Jehvon Clarke led the Falcons with 17 points, eight assists and six steals, all career-highs, while sophomore forward Spencer Parker and redshirt-junior guard Anthony Henderson both tallied career-highs in points with 16 and 15, respectively.
Forward Chauncey Orr and center Cameron Black each chipped in with 14 and 12 points apiece, while forward Richaun Holmes recorded 12 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals.
Earlham was led by Michael Parker who had a team-high 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting from behind the three-point line, while point guard Jack O'Flaherty added nine points and five rebounds in the loss.
The Falcons got off to a slow start to start the contest, as the home team held a slight 6-5 lead at the 15:27 mark off the first half. However, out of the first media timeout, BGSU increased its intensity on the defensive side which fed the offensive surge as the Falcons exploded with a 24-3 run, highlighted by nine points from Orr, over the next eight minutes to take a demanding 30-8 lead.
During that span, the Falcons' defense held Earlham without a made field goal for over seven minutes, as the home team pulled out to a double digit lead on its way to a 50-30 lead at the halftime break.
The intermission did nothing to slow down the Falcons, as BGSU started the second half on a 13-0 run, highlighted by two dunks from Black, to extend its lead to 33 points at 63-30 with just over 16 minutes to go in the game.
After a steal and breakaway tomahawk dunk by Holmes put BGSU up 35 at 67-32, the Falcons added to its lead with buckets from Parker, Black and Tisdale en route to pushing its lead out to 40 with just over four minutes to play.
A three-pointer from the left corner with just over a minute remaining in the contest gave the home team 100 points on the night, as the Falcons outscored Earlham 52-19 over the final 20 minutes of play to fly away with the 102-49 non-conference win.
BGSU outscored Earlham 58-14 in points in the paint, 29-8 in fast break points, and 30-0 in points off turnovers.
The game was Coach Orr's 800th at the intercollegiate level as a player, assistant coach and head coach, while the victory was his 500th overall at the intercollegiate level in any of the three previously mentioned roles.
Bowling Green (1-0) will return to the Stroh Center to host the Bulls of South Florida on Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
